21. part of canon you think is overhyped
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
Haha another one to be incendiary about!
This is my personal view and I might be missing many aspects, so take this with a grain of salt. It's a challenge to put this in words.
21: The part of canon, or rather an element of Tolkien’s writing I think is overhyped
I don't know if this is "overhyped", I would rather say my reaction is probably an effect of me being a massive Trekkie besides loving the Silmarillion: I tire when there is a lot of emphasis (in discourse and fanworks) on the suffering and tragedies in the Silm with little to no regard to the hopeful and more ambiguous layers, and unusual concepts the Legendarium offers.
As an angbanger I treasure how Tolkien never mentioned Melkor being abusive or violent towards Mairon. That's special, because there are not many dark lords in fiction who are not in competition with each other. They feed off each other, enable each other. That cooperative lens for the "dark side" is a gift that does not stop giving.
I love Tolkien's writing for all those characters with vastly different priorities and goals, and all the misunderstanding, hurt and horribleness are often a dire consequence for not thinking things through properly. Not thinking beyond one's own goals and realm. It's fascinating and timeless. Also I tend to read things more abstractly, more on the absurd side. And that is a me thing. Absolutely!
Nevertheless, I do enjoy some fics about trauma. For them to work for me, I need figurative or literal faraway stars to shine so that the characters can find a messy, interesting, and hopefully also (subtly) amusing way forward to cause one of those famous eucatastrophes.
Our mileages vary and I am not criticizing anyone seeking catharsis in writing or reading about favorite characters being put through the ringer.
2: your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores:
It's at the very beginning. That part is essential for my understanding of the whole Tolkien legendarium:
Eru Illuvatar committed the first act of violence.
Here are the questions if you want to give it a try.
