He's been alone and ostracized his entire short life in New Yoke, so safe to say selflessness and kindness weren't something he'd experienced often nor had anyone to model them after, while both have most likely been introduced to him via Sonic in the first place... Who oftentimes gets himself into pointless, life threatening trouble due to his need to help everyone and fix everything regardless of his wellbeing

However, unlike Nine, Sonic can afford to pull his bullshit stunts because he has people, acquaintances, friends and family (and main character armor) to drag his ass from the brink of death whenever its necessary, and he has years of practice in creating those helpful relationships wherever he goes

AND then foreshadowing to the end of the movie

Well, you can't help that sickening satisfaction churning in your gut as you treat him with the same callousness and cruelty you've been met with every step of the way, simply for him daring to seek any comfort in you. Because it's just unfair. What else does he deserve, why should he get the comfort and certainty you always longed for and never really received. All that whining and naivety pisses you off so much, but then you're reminded of just how you managed to survive in the first place, and it wasn't by tolerating those that hurt you forever.

You can't exactly deny it anymore, that's you that exploited your moment of emotional weakness, and equally as hard, it hits you that you haven't changed at all despite how hard you tried to convince yourself otherwise.

Eventually, you find out how seamlessly those trembling shoulders fit into your arms. You realize, It would've been so easy for someone, anyone to have hugged you so long ago, but they simply chose to hurt you instead, if only to keep them from having to think about their own misery too much.

Wouldn't it be fucked up if you get to see the relieving confirmation that you do manage to survive, but immediately learn how much you've grown to hate yourself. That you've become pretty much indistinguishable from those monsters that hurt you. Cold, sharp and tall, with a face and voice filled with so much hate, all aimed at you. One that tells you becoming this is your only choice besides death.

You're not too surprised, after all, you don't think of yourself too fondly either. How could you when you've been born fundamentally different and wrong. But there's only so much truthful abuse you're willing to suffer before taking your own advice and biting back. That single act of defiance seems to be enough, and his resentful mask crumbles, revealing the rather disappointingly flimsy confidence act beneath.

He eventually tells you of a friend, one that didn't last, and lied, but for what it was worth, was gentle with both of you all the same. It feels nice to be held like this, and you really don't want to be let go and forced into your seemingly destined solitude again. With how the grip around your shoulder tightens, you're certain you're not alone in feeling like this, but point it out and he tells you to shut up.

My silly, so rejected and defeated and her attempt at undercutting it with a joke is making it come off as a person realizing they overshared and is trying to act like Whops Haha Ignore that here is an Arm Pun get it cuz you're missing an arm haha, instead of the empty marvel "comedic" He's Right Behind Me Isn't He shit. Like the general delivery has this somber undertone and sounds so genuine, the voice actor did this so well I am going to combust
