@neorescue hair talk, blah blah, this got longer than I thought it would!
i’ve been very.. “lucky” in that a stranger’s only touched my hair with no context exactly once (that i remember), last winter actually. Ancient white security guard, ironically enough. Sproinged a lock. Still kinda bitter that other people kept saying things like “he was probably just trying to be friendly” when I’d express upset that it happened at all.
I think it hasn’t happened more often because when I was very young, I wore barette’d braids (click clack); then wore a ponytail nearly all through middle and high school until I started getting it hot ironed near the end of high school for a few months or so.
As for straightening it, mom won’t shut up about it when it comes up, lol. I love her with all my heart, of course, but (tbh being white) she just can’t understand how long it took me to adore my hair the way it grows... Hell, the fact that I needed to ‘learn’ to love it in the first place. How it would feel almost like a betrayal to strip out the curls, knowing and feeling the things I do now.
...Plus, maintaining the straightened look is bollocks. Apparently I like to grab scarves and whip them off my head in my sleep. xP
Oh, something that always cracks me up in a lighthearted way is that a lot of people that meet me ask “how long it takes to curl my hair every morning” . . . i’m like It Gro Like Dat
