Ah, this is one of those questions for which there are no easy answers, the subject of fierce debate between academics throughout time, as diehard “pulley-and-lever” atechnogenesis-types and “divine algorithm” true believers alike grapple with the purpose of components which nearly always appear vestigial. And as usual, the underlying factors at play will often vary between universes!

Cybertronian sensory systems are designed to function in both robot mode and alt-mode, across many varied body-types. Visual input is often rerouted during transformation, from optics to headlights. But sometimes the head remains the central focal point, with a transparent cockpit serving to shield against environmental hazards and improve aerodynamics. You may have seen this with Autobots like X-Brawn, Side Swipe, and Breakaway.

Being able to see into a cockpit is often just as important as being able to see out of one. Having a window into the internal components can allow for non-invasive diagnosis of a fault. It may even help prevent mechanical failure in the first place, stopping overheating by allowing light to escape the spark core; light reflecting back into the spark is one of the most common causes of burnout in Transformers who are naturally prone to overcharge.

Some Transformers with energon weapon systems keep a reserve supply in the form of solid, crystalline energon, incorporated into the superstructure. Quite conveniently, our disguise protocols are often able to contextualize such growths as being windows! Unless the energon is rendered inert, however, such configurations can be extremely volatile.

Sideswipe

- Sideswipe did his best to let you enjoy your book. Though you were sitting in his lap, he was hardly enjoying sitting in complete silence. 

-He really just wanted to spend time with you so he thought he could be patient as he enjoyed having you close. Unfortunately, he realized that you planned on reading a lot more in one sitting than he thought and started getting bored. 

-In an effort to keep his pent up energy at bay, he starts swaying which was soothing at first, but when you got dizzy, you told him to stop.

-Eventually, he decides to tickle you to get you to stop reading and to give him some attention.

-When you stand up and face him, he flashes you a smile.

-”Finally! Now how about we go for a drive, and if you want, you can tell me what that book is about.”

Hot Shot

- When Hot Shot heard that you wanted to take a trip with him one of your favorite site seeing spots, he was extremely excited. 

-However, when you immediately set up your chair and easel his spark sank a bit. 

-He was as patient as he could be as he watched you draw the beautiful landscape around you. He enjoyed the sun on his plating and watching the local fauna scamper. 

-Your skill always impressed him, but he was really hoping to just get to run around and share the sights with you. 

-After the first time you asked him to be quieter, he felt even more discouraged to try to tell you how he felt. That doesn’t last for long as he gets more antsy as the sun moves in the sky. 

-Eventually, he decides to stand up and directly block your view.

- “ Alright that's enough for now. How about we actually start experiencing this place instead of just looking at it?”

Megatron

- The moment he returned from his mission and didn’t get up from your writing, Megatron was irritated.

- He had come to understand that writing was important to you, but to him talking about how that day’s battle with the Autobots went was much more important in his eyes. 

-As a warning, he would tell you to stop and speak to him every few minutes. 

-If you still are insistent to enjoy your activity, then he will pick you up and remove your notebook or laptop from your hand. 

-”Human, you had better remember that you are here to entertain me, not entertain yourself.”
