Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie,Ā GBEĀ (baptismal name: Fikirte Mariam; 12 January 1912 ā 6 April 2003) was the eldest child of EmperorĀ Haile SelassieĀ and EmpressĀ Menen Asfaw.
Born in the city ofĀ Harar, Princess Tenagnework received her title upon her father's succession to the imperial throne in November 1930. Princess Tenagnework was first married toĀ RasĀ Desta Damtew, a member of the prominentĀ aristocraticĀ Addisge clan.Ā RasĀ Desta and Princess Tenagnework were the parents of two sons, Amha andĀ Iskinder DestaĀ (later Rear Admiral), and four daughters, PrincessesĀ Aida Desta,Ā Seble Desta,Ā Sophia DestaĀ andĀ Hirut Desta.Ā RasĀ Desta Damtew was appointed Governor-General, first ofĀ KaffaĀ andĀ Limu, and then ofĀ Sidamo.
In 1935, following the invasion of Ethiopia byĀ Italy, the imperial family was forced to flee into exile atĀ Fairfield House, BathĀ inĀ England. However,Ā RasĀ Desta remained behind to command the imperial forces fighting in the south of the country.Ā RasĀ Desta was captured and summarily executed by theĀ fascistĀ forces. While in exile, Princess Tenagnework gave birth toĀ EmebetĀ Tsige Mariam (Mary) during a brief union withĀ AtoĀ Abebe Retta, who later served in ambassadorial and other roles in the post-war imperial government, and would eventually become president of the Imperial Senate after their separation.
