My lord what book is this
Itās The PawnĀ series (Book 1Ā | Book 2Ā | Book 3 coming soon). As a quick summary, the series follows a girl from a nomadic tribe as sheās taken to a kingdom as insurance for a peace treaty (donāt worry the ick in that is discussed and dissected later on), and then follows her as she grows as a person and eventually discovers her heritage which is way more important than anyone could have known. Itās also worth noting that, in what is somewhat of a rarity for fantasy books, there is very little to no violence in the series, as the protagonist canāt fight. That is not to say the story is short of conflict however.Ā
I should also note that the series doesnāt really grow into itās own until after the first part of the first book. It has a slight memoir presentation which drops more and more as the story progresses. The first book is slightly weak and disjointed, largely consisting of a series of vignettes in the protagonistās life, and an overarching plot is not introduced until near the end, though there are sprinkled hints throughout. The books are also enormousĀ and while I like that, others might not. Itās difficult to discuss the story without spoiling the major twist at the end of the first book, and so I wonāt.Ā
I felt as if the stories started rather slowly, they certainly built up over time. Because of the sheer length of the novels, there are lots of points to learn about characters, and how well rounded they are. With that said, some characters do devolve into satellites over time, which is disappointing. There are asides and poor sections and things which could have been cleaned up, but I frankly didnāt mind them all that much. The only thing that was particularly jarring was the narratorās tendency when describing certain people or events to hop forward and describe the end of that, but this dissipates almost entirely by the second novel and is a relatively minor complaint. There are sections of very good writing as well, though Iām more of someone who gets lost in a book instead of deliberately reading it, at least on the first go. Some elements which got me extremely excited (a triad relationship in particular) do not develop until near the end of the second book, but I expect a deep exploration of it in the third.Ā
I dislike and discourage arbitrary score/stars/whatever as the summary of a review so Iāll end with this. The story is rather long, and can lack polish at times, but it is very solid and steadily improves throughout. The primary characters are all very well rounded and often talk with each other about their feelings and motivations. There are a few sour moments I can recall, but overall there are few trigger warnings I would add. I enjoyed it mostly because of the sparkles of humor and a very genuine connection that I felt to the protagonist, as well as just how fun the story could be. I have high hopes for the final novel in the series.Ā
