Mutsuki is the love of my life. I love him so much. If I could I would build a shrine for him. And Kaneki is there too I guess. Anyways as I was saying if Mutsuki asked me to refill a lake, I might as well summon the water gods.

But honestly I dont like this duo, but the way Mutsuki becomes obsessed with "sasaki" to the point he's not ready to accept the fact that his sweet mentor sasaki is technically not there anymore but instead there's Kaneki who has more pressing issues at hand is very intriguing

Connotations of ‘Shousei’

Undertaker’s first person pronoun 小生 (shousei)belongs to the category of ‘kenjougo’ or ‘humble form’ in Japanese polite speech, ‘keigo’. This word does not have an English equivalent, but I would say ‘lowly humble I’ would be the connotation.

The first image that Japanese speakers have upon hearing ‘shousei’ is probably a very old fashioned, grandpa’s way of referring to one self.

‘Shousei’ is only used when the speaker is talking to someone they deem the same rank, or below themselves. So strictly speaking, this term cannot be used to address Queen Victoria for example, because she is the highest authority.

Despite belonging to polite speech, ‘shousei’ is ironically arrogant. This is because the listener might not see themselves as the same- or a lower rank than the speaker. In short, the shousei-user imposes their own opinion of the listener’s status onto the listener, while at the same time calling themselves ‘humble and low’ in status. Many listeners’ inner reaction might be: “why do you call yourself humble while having the cheek to consider me merely humble in rank?” Most people however, would not call shousei-users out for their implicated arrogance, probably because it is usually very old people saying ‘shousei’, and in Japanese society, the elderly are paid a lot of respect.

In a nutshell, while superficially ‘shousei’ is polite and humble, the connotation is old fashioned, presumptuous, self-conscious and imposing.

How might ‘shousei’ reflect Undertaker’s personality?

As briefly touched upon in this post, Undertaker is considered a person who does not hide his emotions a lot. This is probably a partial explanation as to why a mere undertaker would refer to himself as ‘shousei’ despite speaking to the Earl of Phantomhive also before the revelation of his true colours.

Furthermore, Undertaker appears to have very little regard for others. He seems self-serving and only cares about whatever he has awarded the ‘stamp of interesting’, as excellently attested in the Luxury Liner Arc where he imposed his interest for ‘science’ onto a whole ship. (I would say that sacrificing half a cruiser basically because he was bored was pretty self-serving). In this sense, the imposing nature of ‘shousei’ might allude to this imposing nature of Undertaker himself.

As for Undertaker’s past… I would say ‘shousei’ only hints at the fact that he is pretty old and did not move along with the times as well as say Ronald. Otherwise this first person pronoun tells us nothing about from what age Undertaker originated, what his past relationships are, or any personal history.
