30. “This place is definitely haunted.”

“I don’t know why I agreed to this,” Aura quietly lamented as she followed a couple paces behind Crystal. Sure, she was always willing to go the extra mile for an art project – that was what she was getting a degree in, after all. But even she had her limits.

Crystal, on the other hand, did not. So, when they were assigned their midterm project – to create a story via a sculpture made of unconventional material, sneaking into an abandoned museum was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. “It’s fine. It wasn’t even a real museum, the guy was running it out of his garage.”

“Is that supposed to be reassuring?” She huffed as they crept onto the property. Within seconds, she felt the temperature drop inexplicably. “This place is definitely haunted.”

“Sick, maybe we’ll get extra credit.” When they rounded the property, her grin broadened. The garage door had been ripped off the hinges, likely sold for scrap metal. “Jackpot.”

Aura hesitated as she watched Crystal rifle through scattered piles of junk. Clearly, anything of value had been ransacked, but her project partner was acting like a kid in a candy shop. “Find anything good?”

“Look!” She triumphantly held up a small, white slab with a ship intricately carved in. “It’s called scrimshaw, you usually only see this sorta thing on the east coast. This sets us up for a nautical storyline.”

She carefully moved closer, avoiding stepping on anything sharp. “That’s actually really cool, did you know this sort of thing was here?”

“‘Course,” Crystal looked at her as if she’d sprouted a second head. “You think I did this with no plan?” She asked as she tucked the art into her bag and continued her search.

14. things you said after you kissed me

“Okay, okay, Suzie, it’s your turn,” Kori prompted. The group of friends had gathered in Arrietty’s dorm room to celebrate the last weekend before the semester ended. They’d all finished with finals and were in desperate need to let off steam, which ended up manifesting in a game of ‘never have I ever’, which already had the group fairly tipsy.

Suzie hesitated, chewing on her bottom lip as she decided on something to say. She could go for something targeted to one person, or something too outlandish for any of them to have done. But both of those felt like cop-outs, so her turn brought out a confession. “Never have I ever been kissed.”

The collective gasp from her friends made her immediately regret her decision. “I-I mean, I have, in shows, but that doesn’t really count, especially since those were boys…”

“No, hey, it’s okay,” Lydia chimed in. “This sort of thing happens at different times for everyone, you don’t need to feel bad about it, it’s not like you’re on a deadline.”

Suzie scoffed. “Easy for you to say,” she murmured, gesturing to how she was sitting in Kori’s lap, at how neither of them could avoid physical affection for more than a few minutes.

“This seems like a pretty easy fix,” Jewels remarked. When no one seemed to pick up what she was implying, she rolled her eyes and huffed. “C’mere, Suzie,” she shifted closer to her friend, cupping her face and pressing a tender kiss to her lips until she needed to come up for air. She sat back down, cross-legged with a satisfied grin. “You have to take a drink now.”

But Suzie had short-circuited past the point of speaking, let alone drinking. She wasn’t sure if Jewels knew she had been harboring a crush on her since they’d met in sophomore year or if she was just being a good friend. All she could think about was how soft her lips were, how the scent of her perfume clouded her mind. It took her a moment to realize everyone’s eyes were on her, waiting for her to react. “Oh, um. Right. Thanks,” she murmured and took a swig of her drink. “Who’s next?”

“I am,” Arrietty volunteered. “Never have I ever left Suzie speechless.” As she and the other girls burst into a fit of giggles as only Jewels drank, Suzie’s face turned a bright shade of red.

“Yeah, well, don’t get used to it,” she mumbled, looking anywhere but directly at her friends.

ok the main reason this took so long wasnt because of the ship, but rather me not knowing what i could make nini infodump on bcs my degree is in sociology, and there is very little overlap w engineering

40. “Nobody asked me, but I will answer.”

“No, no, I don’t believe you,” Kenya insisted as she returned to her off-campus apartment with one of her friends, Myki. “There is no way dropping a coin off of a building and hitting someone’s head would kill them. Maybe, like, one of those big half-dollar coins. Maybe.”

Myki huffed and rolled her eyes as she took off her coat. “I’m telling you, it’s a thing. Someone dropped a penny off of the Empire State Building, it hit someone on the head, and they died.”

Nini, Kenya’s roommate, couldn’t help but tune into the conversation. As a mechanical engineering student, this was the sort of thing she could offer insight on. Granted, this was physics rather than engineering, but she still knew she could answer. “Nobody asked me, but I will answer.” 

Kenya let out a quiet laugh, realizing that she should have expected as much, “Alright, enlighten us then.”

“Okay, so, the story about the penny and the Empire State Building is a myth. You have to factor in velocity and air resistance. However, if you had a heavier coin, or – and I know this might be cheating - a roll of pennies, and threw it with stronger force from a higher altitude, it could potentially cause deadly harm.” She spoke matter-of-factly, albeit a bit fast. “So, it’s arguably possible, but not likely.”

While Myki listened with a mix of annoyance at being wrong and interest in the truth, Kenya was beaming with pride, and perhaps a tinge of affection. “See? What did I tell you? Her smart bitch energy is rubbing off on me.” 

“And boy, do you need it,” she teased, then glanced down at her phone. “Fuck, I forgot, I have a group project to work on. I’ll text you later,” she said before leaving. 

Kenya decided to join Nini on the couch. “Did you learn that shit in class or something?”

Nini chuckled and shrugged. “I mean, it’s physics, not engineering. So it’s not my focus or anything, but they’re all concepts I need to be familiar with regardless,” she explained. 

“Hey, it saved my ass, so whatever works, works,” she offered and slung her arm around her. It was one of many times she would take any excuse for physical contact, and she hadn’t been met with any resistance so far. 

18. “Explain it to me like I’m five.”

It was a fairly typical night for Lydia, Kori, and Suzie. They finished work for the day, had something to eat, and ended up sitting in a circle on the floor of their main living area, passing around a bowl and chatting about whatever came to mind.

“I’m not saying I don’t like musicals,” Kori was in the middle of explaining. “I saw A Star Is Born in theaters and listened to the soundtrack.”

“That barely counts,” Suzie retorted. “Besides, it’s the fourth time they’ve made that movie; clearly, they’re just following a formula they know works. And I’m saying this as someone that has worshipped the ground Lady Gaga walks on since 2009.”

Lydia waved her free hand as she set the empty pipe down on the coffee table. “Wait, the 2018 version is the fourth iteration of that movie? Is anything significantly different between them other than the cast?”

“No, but also yes, kinda,” she replied, but waved it off. “You guys would get bored listening to me explain it anyway.”

“We don’t get bored of you,” Kori insisted. “We’re just dumb.” She knew that they did have a habit of teasing Suzie about the long-winded tangents she would go off on, but that had always just been part of their dynamic. But her comment had her wondering if, maybe, she was hurting her friend’s feelings. “Explain it to me like I’m five.”

Suzie blinked in surprise, which confirmed Kori’s suspicion. “Well, to be honest, the third version was my favorite. I know I’m biased because it’s Barbra Streisand, but…”

Kori and Lydia sat and listened attentively as she explained the different dynamics of the four movies. Now and then, she would stop and look at the couple with uncertainty, silently asking if they’d reached their threshold of her rambling. In turn, one of them would use that as an opportunity to ask a relevant question.

“I actually kinda wanna see the Streisand version now,” Lydia remarked once Suzie had finished her explanation, unable to keep the grin off her face at the way she lit up.

“Wait, really?”

41. “I’ve been up for a day and a half, don’t ask me questions.”

Like most weekends, Kori woke up late morning, mildly hungover from the night before. Grad school was tough, so she made the most of her free time to let off steam. The same, however, could not be said for her roommate. 

Even when they met and became friends during undergrad, Lydia was quiet, studious – at least in comparison – and introverted. They got along immediately, somehow managing to balance each other out, rather than get in each other’s way when their schedules overlapped.

But inevitably, it led to mornings like this, where she lazily wandered into the living area, well rested if not for a bit of a headache, and looked up with furrowed brows. Lydia sat hunched over her desk, alternating between staring blankly at her screen and typing furiously. 

45. “She’s so out of my league, it’s embarrassing.”

“Girl, are you even listening to me?” Jewels huffed after she failed to get a response to her friend, snapping her fingers in front of her face to get her attention.

Arrietty blinked as she came back to reality. “We’re gonna have to find a new café once her modeling career takes off.”

It was clear in that moment why she hadn’t heard a word her friend said – her attention had been entirely affixed to Lana, one of the baristas that she had grown especially fond of since she began frequenting the café. It’d started with pleasantries exchanged, then before either of them knew it, Lana would be spending her breaks sitting and chatting with Arrietty, especially if they were alone.

“You’re staring again,” Rosé chided in a sing-song voice, nudging her friend and castmate playfully.

Jan’s cheeks flushed red and she gave her a light shove in response. “Leave me alone, I’m a simple lesbian with needs,” she huffed.

“Could’ve just stopped after ‘simp’,” she chuckled. “I don’t see why you can’t just ask her out, since when have you ever been the shy type anyway?”

She chewed on her lip as she tried to conjure up an excuse. “Well, I don’t know if she’s gay. She could just be artsy. That comes with the territory of being a costume designer, after all.”

Rosé didn’t know if she should laugh or roll her eyes, torn between amusement, exhaustion, and pity in the face of her ‘dilemma’. “Babe, she looks like she just came from Warped Tour and her main hobby is upcycling fashion. What part of that sounds heterosexual to you?”

As stubborn as Jan was, she has to acknowledge that she wasn’t wrong – nearly everything about Daya screamed sapphic no matter how much ignorance she feigned. She crossed her arms and turned to face Rosé. “So what am I supposed to do? Just go up to her and be like ‘oh hey Daya, I think you’re really hot, do you wanna go out with me after you’re done altering my act one outfit for the third time?’”

“Sure.”

The voice coming from behind nearly startled her off balance if it hadn’t been for Rosé steadying her while trying not to double over in laughter. She looked like a deer in the headlights when she finally faced the taller woman, her brain short-circuiting as she scrambled for a response, but only managed, “wait, really?”

“Yeah,” she shrugged. “I think you’re hot too, so why not? We can check out that new diner down the block after rehearsal.” She decided to take mercy on a still-flustered Jan and added, “I’ll see you after rehearsal,” before returning to her station.

Jan blinked rapidly as she processed what just happened. “Don’t say it.”

19. “Nothing else matters when we’re alone.” / Q. Bookshop AU

On the surface, Mirage and bookshops seemed like an unlikely pairing. Prior to starting her job there, she hadn’t sat and read a book since high school. But after the bar she worked at closed, she needed to pay the bills while she looked for a new, steady gig. And to her surprise, she had grown fond of the place. The peace and quiet was such a stark contrast to being in a bar or nightclub, and her body thanked her for getting on a normal sleep schedule.

The downside was the lack of eye candy it brought in. It wasn’t to say no one attractive came into the store, but it wasn’t as noticeable. And when it was, it was pretty clear that they wanted to be left alone to browse and read in peace. That was what made today different.

About halfway into her shift, Mirage noticed a cute, red-headed girl wandered in and started looking around. Well, she spent about half the time looking around and the other half asking her questions.

“I gotta admit,” she remarked after the third instance, “you’ve made me use my brain more than I have in a long time, but don’t tell nobody that.”

“Your secret’s safe with me,” she assured, “nothing else matters when we’re alone.” When Mirage smiled at her attempt at flirtation, she added, “I’m Plasma, by the way.”

She chuckled softly, tucking her hair behind her ear and glancing down at her desk. “Mirage,” she replied. “So, other than reading…” she looked to see what book Plasma was holding, “Sondheim’s biography, you got any other plans this weekend?”

Plasma blinked in surprise, both her boldness and interest in her in the first place catching her off guard. Mirage just oozed coolness in a way she’d never witnessed up close, and girls like that rarely spared her a passing glance. “Um, no, my schedule is pretty clear.”

“Lemme take you out, I got the nightlife here figured out pretty well, I’m sure I can find something up your alley,” Mirage tilted her head in thought. “I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess you’re a karaoke bar type.”

She chuckled softly. “Damn, I know you work in a bookstore, but I didn’t realize I was that easy to read. But yeah, I’d really like that.”

“Perfect,” she hummed, plucking one of the bookmarks out from its holder and writing her name and number on the back, sliding it over. “I get off at four, text me then.”
