EYES BLINK ONCE THEN TWICE BEFORE DROPPING. There really was no need to look when he could smell the blood. “Yea, probably ‘cause ya were,” Spike deadpanned as eyes returned to the fallen angels’ face. “Who’d ya piss off this time, hmm?”

Trembling blood slick hands grasp the door handle, and Shiloh said a prayer to any god that was listening. She felt very cold, and distant from herself even in her panic. Was no longer away of the accidental cuts along her arms from getting the rope off.

Please don’t be locked, she thought. Please. They tied me up, don’t let them have locked the door --

The door swung open, and only her terrified reflexes caught it before it could hit the wall and make a sound. The rest of the house was dark. Even the windows were dark. 

Night, then. They’re asleep. 

She slipped out of the basement, closing the door behind her. It took her longer than it should have to find the front door. 

And when she opened it, she could have sobbed. Trees. A gravel driveway. The dark of the countryside. 

Barely a step out the door, and the dog she hadn’t noticed chained in the front yard started barking. Lights flicked on in the house behind her. 

Shiloh took off in a limping run.
