The Difference Between the Shayatīn and the Jinn
Q: “What is the difference between al-Jinn and al-Shayaṭīn (ie: devils)?” ما هو الفرق بين الجن والشياطين؟ A: “al-Jinn include both al-Shayaṭīn wa ʿl-Ṣāliḥīn (ie: devils and the pious forms of Jinn). الجن يشمل الشياطين والصالحين، al-Shayaṭīn are created to tempt and mislead people. والشياطين خلقوا لإغواء الناس وإضلالهم، Meanwhile, (the Jinn that are) al-ṣāliḥūn adhere to their religion. وأما الصالحون فهم متمسكون بدينهم They have Masājid and they perform prayers. There are those among them who cling to the religion of Allah as much as they know. فعندهم المساجد وعندهم الصلاة في حدود ما يعلمون However, they are generally ignorant.” إلا أن الغالب عليهم الجهل.
