G.I. Joe A Real American Hero 4 was published with a cover date of October 1982. The issue introduced Commander Vance Wingfield, his wife Shary, and right-hand man Carruthers. They were created by Larry Hama and Herb Trempe. The FBI tipped the Joes off to a family survivalist camp run by Wingfield, who was actually training the people attending the camp into his own paramilitary army with possible connections to Cobra. Hawk and Grunt went undercover as recruits. Snake Eyes worked survalience on the camp. Snake-Eyes discovered Wingfield planned to send a B-29 to drop a nuclear warhead (provided by Cobra) in Vladivostock to cause World War III with the United States. As a safe guard, Wingfield also had a second nuclear warhead under their camp he could detonate if he felt threatened and to blame Russia. Hawk and Grunt got captured and that caused Wingfield to speed up his plan. Snake-Eyes saved Hawk and Grunt from being executed. Hawk got in a jet to chase down Carruthers in the bomber. Snake-Eyes discovered Wingfield was arming the women and children of the camp and planned to use them as human shields. When Wingfield was going to shoot a mother and child who refused to comply, Shary shot him in the back. She let the Joes know that Wingfield had started the timer on the warhead at the camp. Zap with help from Grunt and Snake-Eyes disarmed it with only 3 seconds to spare. The issue also had a pin-up. ("Operation: Wingfield" G.I. Joe a Real American Hero, Marvel Comic Event)
