Perpetually fascinated by these Shankhas — conch shells of ritual and religious importance in Hinduism — that were intricately hand carved in Tibet. Hindu Aesthetic wrote : A rare depiction of Shanka and Padma, two treasures (nidhi) of the god of Wealth Kubera. he with ash-covered body, she with red skin, each with third frontal eye and crescent moon, they sit on a lotus, embracing each other, each holding a conch and a flowering lotus, banana and other trees at either side, with black and white rules and red border, two devanagari inscriptions at top, the reverse with English inscription in pencil 'God of Love, Kama/Dev with wife' Christies.

Śankh - Ritual Conch Shell 19th century. Kerala, India. Shell (Turbinella pyrum), brass, wax. Sankh: 6 × 6 × 16 3/4 in. (15.2 × 15.2 × 42.5 cm) In Hinduism the conch shell is usually associated with the god Vishnu, Lord of the Waters, but the brass fittings on this shell indicate a link with Shaivite ritual. The mouthpiece suggests a lotus, while the heavily decorated conical end depicts rows of nagas and wreath-bearing kirtimukhas ("Faces of Glory"). A yoni design is interspersed between each naga and kirtimukha. The fitting terminates with the head of a makara, atop which strides a yali. (via The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
