Due to me double booking myself I have had to reschedule my shadow mechanisms workshop to the 13th of September! Hope you can make it!
Hello! I am offering 2 Shadow Puppetry course over the next couple of months!
May 31st is the first workshop and it will be a re-run of my much requested intro to shadow puppetry. In it I teach a short but comprehensive lesson on the history of shadow puppets around the world and dive a bit in to their contemporaneity use, but the bulk of the day is a time to play with materials I proved like colored transparency, fabrics and paper to build your own shadow puppets and see how they look and move against many different kinds of screens and projectors.

April 7th will be a new workshop focused on making mechanisms to help bring movement into shadow puppets. Students will not walk away from this class with full shadow puppets but they will come away with several examples of mechanisms to put into there shadow puppets at home and resources and techniques to create more.

Matthew Robins paper cut-out shadow puppets
ScaryToons Saturday 2023
Franz Schubert: Erlkönig, a short film inspired by Goethe 's creepy poetic tale about an frightening encounter with the Erlking, a king of the fairies, during a frantic late night ride through the forest, based a well-known musical setting composed by Franz Schubert in 1815. As part of Oxford Lieder 's 2015 Schubert Project, filmmaker Jeremy Hamway-Bidgood combined shadow-puppetry and other traditional techniques to create an effective visual retelling of the story. (Make sure to engage closed-captions to see the subtitles in your preferred YouTube language if you don't have them on.)

Yes! Another Shadow Puppet Workshop! After an incredible success last winter I have decided to polish and tweak my shadow puppet workshop and offer it again! Please come on down and join us for some spooky shadowy fun!
I am Izzy B a freelance designer and maker of puppets based at Puppet Place on Bristol's Harborside, working mostly between the south-west of England, Atlanta Georgia and Denver Colorado.
Although I didn’t study puppetry until my late 20's, I have long seen them as an unmatched blend of character design and story-telling. My time on the Puppetry MA at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama gave me the opportunity to explore this incredible fusion, building on my roots in costume and production design. Since then have had the good fortune to learn an amazing variety of skills and build a strong professional artistic practice. It has been an intense and rewarding change, and I hope to share that experience with as many as possible.
Date: Saturday November 11th
Time: 10AM - 5PM
Fee: Adult - £40, Student - £30, Concession £30
Location: Puppet Place, Unite 18, Albion Dockside Estate, Hanover Place, Bristol BS1 6UT
In this six and a half hour course we will watch, build and play with shadow puppets on a variety of different screens and lighting rigs. Shadow puppetry is a versatile art that lends itself to cooperative play, so a workshop is an incredible way to become familiar with the craft for the first time or to expand an existing skill set.
We will start the day with a short session watching a variety of different kinds of shadow puppetry from around the world. But far more than just the traditional Indian of Balinese shadow puppets, we will be exploring the modern comedic stylings of Bunk Puppets out of Canada and the sentimental stories of the Stringpullers Puppet Company, along with many other artists that have taken this ancient art and done surprising things with it.
Next, we will develop the ideas or short stories that we want to bring to life with shadow puppetry, nothing complicated, this can be done in teams or as individuals.
At around 12:30 we will break for lunch, there are many delicious food options on Spike Island where Puppet Place is located. You will be left to your own delectable devices.
Once we are all back we will start building! I will supply you with paper, card, cord, dowels and all sorts to help build, but I would recommend bringing your own sketchbooks and pencils if you are artistically inclined. If you have a specific material you think could cast a cool shadow, bring it along and we may find a use for it! As a puppet fabricator first and foremost this is where I will be of the most use to you, if you have something that just isn't moving right feel free to grab me and I will see what we can do!
Starting at about 3 my puppetry assistant and I will start to help you puppeteer your creations and then we will finish with a short show of everyone's work throughout the day.
