They did! They met when they were 16. May had taken a LOA from the Hoenn league and had plans to travel around Johto (which should have been where she did her original journey but then Norman got the Petalburg job). Reika suggested they go together, so they did. The relationship blossomed from there and they ended up developing feelings for each other. They would go on dates depending on what town they were in, or they’d walk along the lake/beach they were near to clear their minds from the stress of being a trainer.
It was one of those fall hard and crash hard relationships, because once May completed the Johto league and was making plans to return back to Hoenn to resume her duties as champion (roughly a year or so later), Reika, who had originally been okay with the idea of a long-distance relationship, broke it off the morning May was to leave for Hoenn.
