When Derek is born, there is an earthquake. Beacon Hills is many things, but it is not a place of earthquakes. This is an anomaly, this sudden shaking of the land, and Peter watches Talia go through the pain of birthing a cub, and he makes note of how her cries resonate with the moving earth. As the baby is brought to the world of the living, the earth shakes more; giddy, Peter thinks of the land. Giddy at this baby's birth. That's what it is.
The town reels with the destruction, however minimal it seems to be. It is the strangeness of the earthquake that has the people in a panic, and it takes two days of Mayor Yukimura calling for council meetings and community barbecues that they begin to somehwat calm down.
The baby is named Derek on the first day itself, born underneath the Nemeton, his pale blue eyes reflecting the moonlight in silver hues. Talia sobs with relief, Nathan beside her, stroking her hair. Laura is back at the pack house, safely tucked in the bed, the rest of the pack members keeping watch. Talia had wanted to bring her with them, fearing the worst of the anomaly, but their mom had convinced her to not do it. The birth of the Alpha's cub is a big deal, but it is also private: only the Mate, Emissary and Left Hand are allowed to be present, for comfort, safety, and protection, respectively.
It has been tradition since ages, and Talia is the last person to break it.
Derek is a calm baby. Sleeps through the night, doesn't cry for attention. Only does it for feeding, his survival instinct as strong as his lungs. Peter adores him, even if he may never admit it to anyone.
He is also curious about the boy. Why an earthquake? It cannot be a coincidence. Truly, he wonders how some people can be so dumb. Calling it a coincidence is insulting to the Powers That Be, which must have called upon such a natural reaction of the land for a reason. Derek is a special boy, and Peter vows to find out how.
Besides his incredibly compassionate heart, that is.
It is in his eyes, which have slowly turned into a kaleidoscope of colors, the kindness of him. Derek's trust is not so easily earned, but once it is, it is extremely difficult to dislodge it.
Derek is a boy destined to become a kind man, one that will be an Alpha with mercy in his heart but cunning in his mind. Peter sees the makings of it right from the beginning, the way the boy will procure solutions to his own problems as well as those he deems important to him. Laura is the first born and thus has the claim to being the next Hale Alpha, however Peter knows, somehow, perhaps instinctually, that Derek will be the Alpha.
Another piece of the puzzle falls in place when their emissary falls pregnant. She's an amazing woman, Claudia. Peter likes her wit and humor, and he enjoys the perspective of her husband, the deputy, and if luck is on his side, soon-to-be Sheriff of Beacon Hills. Peter is happy for the couple.
He is, also, astonished to see an almost five-year-old Derek climb onto Claudia's lap one morning, his small fists rubbing against his eyes, and his nose scrunching determinedly to find a scent.
Peter remembers the conversation well.
"Derek, honey? What are you trying to find?"
"Mine," is what Derek growls in reply to Claudia, and shoves his nose against her barely-showing belly.
Peter's laughing figure is shot out of the end of the couch and onto the floor by Claudia's impeccable throw of one of the decorative pillows from said couch.
Thereafter, it was peculiar but not unseemly to find Derek following beside Claudia, his whole little being focused on the life forming inside her. And when the night came, Peter wasn't at all surprised to witness the thunderstorm.
Claudia had plans of giving birth in the hospital, but due to miscalculated steps, or simply because of reasons not privy to them, the best possible option left for her seemed to be below the Nemeton.
John had lost his damn mind at the prospect. "It's raining! Heavily!"
"Talia gave birth in an earthquake," Claudia says through gritted teeth, "And the baby doesn't care, nor do I, John. It is—"
Her words are cut off by another scream, and she is right, of course. It is time.
Talia, John, and Peter are the only ones who should go with her, but Derek, the little sneaky wolf that he seems to have become, follows them. It isn't until halfway through that John, the human, realizes his presence first.
They move forward with the determined little boy, who is all sopping wet in his wolf onesie, and really, this is no laughing matter. Except it is.
Claudia is brought below the Nemeton, and the tree, big and branching and beautiful, hums in their presence. The canopy of it sheds them some, but not completely.
And so, under hard rain and sharp thunderstorms, Mieczysław Stilinski is born, his little body almost white under the moonlight, and his eyes, when they open, a shock of topaz, like a glinting jewel; a fallen angel, Peter thinks.
Derek carefully wraps the baby in the blanket Talia removes from the packed bag, her movements locked onto her son's and the baby's, while John tends to his wife.
Peter watches. He notes the way the baby is calmest in Derek's arms, the way Derek is mesmerized.
This is more than just being True Mates.
True Mates itself are the rarest of occurrences, but something tells him this is more than that. The earthquake, and this sudden rain, in April of all things, simply cannot be coincidence. There must be a reason, one that Peter must uncover.
In the coming years, he dedicates his time to the quest, and finds that, oh, this is something unique indeed.
Unique to the point of legend.
Of course, he gathers facts before telling anyone. Derek's control goes onto the list, as does his ability to switch between his shift as easy as breathing. Having such control at the age of seven is almost impossible, but he has it without the growing ego that would have inflated anyone else's with the amount of praise he gets.
Stiles, as Derek had nicknamed Mieczysław almost immediately post his arrival in the world, is no human. His mother's line has some pretty strong magical abilities, but the kind of power that this boy exudes surpasses imagination. Nobody notices at first, not even Peter, until Stiles is a couple of months past his third birthday. It truly isn't until Derek, almost nine, comes down from his room one day into the kitchen, says, "Which packet, Stiles?" that they realize it.
"Honey, he isn't a wolf. He cannot hear you," Nathan tells him, but Derek just shrugs.
"He is for today."
Peter hears the, "Blue one! Blue one! Blue is sooo pretty, Derek!" from Stiles, who is definitely sitting in Derek's room, upstairs.
Derek grabs the blue packet and goes upstairs, and Peter follows, followed by Talia and Nathan, who beckon Claudia as well.
Stiles sitting on the floor, a myriad of toys around him, while the packets of chips sit beside him, torn open, evidently by Derek's claws, who himself is playing with Stiles.
And they're both being fed flying chips.
The three wolves turn to Claudia as one. Her shaking head and awed face is enough to clue them in, and really, Peter thinks, this is fucking incredible.
Powers don't manifest as early as this in magic wielders. They're more of the puberty package, tied to emotions at the beginning rather than will.
This is... defying it.
Peter loves to see when the next piece of the puzzle will fall.
And it does oh so enticingly.
Years later, when Derek is fourteen and Stiles is almost nine, comes the first trial. The Alpha Summit & The Argent Treaty.
Peter doesn't believe Gerard's words to do no harm, so he sets up precautions in place. It pays off, because during the summit, he almost ends up blinding Deaucalion — something that could have turned super bad if left unchecked.
Gerard's attack is met with swift retaliation, but somehow, only his goons end up dead. Gerard himself remains free, and through sheer will, maybe, the old man manages to kidnap Laura.
By the time the adults sniff out their cub, they're too late.
Not in the sense of Laura being hurt, but in the terms of missing the action, somewhat.
When they enter the warehouse, they are faced with Gerard being held down by a black wolf, fangs around his neck, the eyes of the creature a deep, ruby red. Deeper than Talia's. At first, they all assume it to be one of the visiting Alphas, but then they realize Stiles' presence, too, and it clicks.
Stiles frees Laura from the painful looking electric rod, and comes back to Derek, coaxes him back to his human form as Peter and Nathan take care of the psychopath.
Laura lets Talia mother her, and then says, "We'll have two Alphas."
Talia looks at the now human Derek, and eyes shining with pride, she nods. "Come here, both of you," she beckons, and the boys run, Stiles' chattering a comforting sound for all of them.
A few weeks later, Derek admits to everyone he has a new friend, and talks about her often. Paige this, Paige that. Laura teases him, restrained in her words, trying not to upset Derek's control. Even Cora pulls back. Stiles, though, is almost worse.
He riles Derek to the point of him using his Alpha voice to shut up, and the whole Pack silences itself, even Talia. Stiles, though — an exception to all things sane — doesn't back down. The voice doesn't work on him, and Derek isn't phased by it. However, the smell of guilt filters through their home, and Stiles' sigh is followed by comforting words. There is no apologizing though.
Soon, they'll learn from Derek himself that he hates that everyone is walking on eggshells. That is why he kept bringing up Paige, so that someone would tease him, uncle Peter, Laura, Cora. Or that Stiles would rile him up.
"Why would he, though? He should be happy for you. I am." Cora's words are met with a laugh from Derek, and a groan of embarrassement from Stiles.
"He's weirdly possessive — don't push me, you know you are."
"Alright," Stiles sighs, "I am."
"And Paige is a great friend, but I don't nearly think about her as much as I might have let you all believe."
And that is when Peter sees it. The blink-and-you-will-miss-it purple flash of Stiles' eyes. Peter doesn't put thought into why now; he simply focuses on completing the puzzle.
And he does. True Alpha and Purple Eyes? That's easy.
That's legend.
Set in stone as the first Alpha and the first Emissary as well as Spark, who, arguably, also set in stone the sword of Excalibur.
That part of the legend has questionable sources, though. Sure, Merlin Emrys is, as per theories, the most powerful sorcerer of all time, and Arthur Pendragon the greatest ruler, the once and future king, but it doesn't have as much merit.
What Peter is sure about is that somehow, the Powers That Be decided that this is the pack to send these two to.
He watches Stiles argue about the best type of pasta with Derek, and thinks, suddenly, that perhaps this is their happy ending. What legends end happy? None. So this must be their time to be happy.
Peter vows another quest, then. To always protect Derek and Stiles.

You tell him and his friend, "This is private property," and hope, without hope, that you meet the boy again under better circumstances. When your agenda for the day isn't sniffing out the killer of your family. Again.
Your plea falls on a universe that revolves around hurting you.
The boy stays. The new wolf, Scott, is a disaster. The boy—Stiles—stays in the storm raised by Scott.
You try to bond with Scott and push Stiles away. Stiles smells like electricity, his hatred of you sizzling. Scott follows Stiles.
Or so you think.
Their bond is weakening, brotherhood crumbling, as Scott chases the Argent girl. Stiles' loyalty is fierce, you can see the strength of it in his unwavering commitment to help his friend through the full moon, but it isn't towards you.
It hurts you. It's what you need. Stiles doesn't need you in his life; you'll find the Alpha, take the Hale Spark back, and leave. This town is not home for you, and out there is a world to dissappear into.
But things don't happen to plan.
Scott breeds hatred against you, but Stiles' loyalty shifts. He doesn't smell like electricity around you anymore. He almost cuts off your arm to save your life. He saves you.
He keeps saving you.
How he does it is a mystery. You're an Alpha now, drowning in eight feet of water, but he keeps you afloat. Afloat and alive.
You push him for his safety, and he has your back.
He doesn't think werewolves are an abomination.
You keep trying to distance yourself, but his actions speak louder than his sarcastic words, and you're falling. You shouldn't; You can't.
Yet you do.
Then comes the betrayal. But instead of hatred it only brings hurt. Scott's plan to use your body against your consent to bite the perpetuator of your family's demise—Kate had to learn her prejudice and party tricks somewhere—and give him the gift of what he hunts makes you realize you don't really know Stiles.
You thought he would never do this. Not when both of you are, at the least, allies.
You cannot bring yourself to go confront him though. What right do you have? It might have been Scott's plan, or Deaton's, or anybody else's, but Stiles knew of it and he didn't veto it. He let it play out.
That's not something you can deal with it. Not even from your supposed mate. There is no forgiveness for this betrayal. Not right now, maybe not ever.
But then Erica and Boyd come back to you, all beaten and bruised, and they tell you.
Stiles was hurt.
Your own feelings fall off to the wayside. You must go see him—so you do. Once Erica and Boyd are taken care of and asleep, barely, you take off into the night.
The window is easy to climb against, and you watch Stiles' teary-face startle as you knock. He wipes at his face furiously, strides to the window, opens the latch.
"What?"
No rambling words. No filler words. Just a blunt question that could mean anything.
"You're hurt."
"No shit, Sherlock."
"You could've told them."
"Yeah? I'm not a fucking loser."
"No," you say, fierce, "You're a hero."
Stiles' face falls, twists into a sneer. "Go away, Derek."
"I can take away your pain."
"You're joking."
You put your hand on his face, and he lets you. Black veins crawl up your arm.
"Ohmygod," Stiles says, and finally lets you in.
You stay. You watch. You take his pain away, and he tells you how sorry he is he wasn't there to stop Scott.
When Stiles' apology ends in a soft murmur, you ask, "Did you know?"
Stiles stills. It is uncanny. "No." He paces the room, frustrated, at a loss for words. "If I did—If Scott ever came to me—that plan was, it was—No, Derek! Never. You said it yourself. The bite is a gift. You—You didn't consent. I wouldn't do that you, regardless, but especially because... I know. What happened with Kate."
Your breath catches.
"I figured it out. It wasn't your fault, okay? She was—fuck, Derek, she was almost thirty! You were a child!"
"I killed my family, Stiles."
"Derek, no—"
You get up, open the window, so quick that the papers fly from Stiles' desk. "I'll get you killed, too." You give a harsh laugh and add, "All the good things in my life are written in blood, Stiles."
When people ask him what changed his mind, why he's back in Beacon Hills instead of at the fancy FBI job he earned through merit and luck, he just smiles and laughs it up. Insists this is how it just worked out. That the job was good, and being in the field was surprisingly easy for him, but the remote research work landed on his lap once and he realized he'd much rather do that. Working the field was great, but being able to actually spend time with his old man gives him more joy.
The old ladies call him a good man, tell him he's such a good son, and share their own turmoils with him. The old men sneer at his choice until he lets slip just how much he makes, and then they're singing praises, too.
After a couple of weeks, the noise dies down. He is no longer the novelty, the townspeople ready to move on to the next new, shiny thing that catches their attention.
What doesn't die down is whatever is spreading inside him. The burn under his skin is licking up towards his heart, coming out through his pores, charring him to immobility as the sun dips down and comes back up.
After week three, he's unable to move from the bed, and none of their research is bringing about any clues. No one knows why this is happening to him, and they have all accepted this.
That he is going to die. There's no coming back, no cure for this sudden illness that has taken him. None of the books that Deaton provides, that Lydia translates and pours her time into, have a single clue.
It's not as painful, if he's honest. Not now. It was at the beginning, the heat sudden and startling, the pain that comes with it bright and unending. But he's been with it for a while now, gotten used to the constant warmth. A false sense of security.
The only thing left for him is to stop feeling altogether. At the rate his body is shutting down, it's not too far, now. Another day or two, maybe three if he's unlucky.
He's said his goodbyes. Told his father to keep on living, to not only honor the memory of mom, but his, too. There's grief laced in each of their interactions, each word spoken with a weight that brings tears to Stiles' eyes and a tremble that rocks his father's body. It's an ugly sight, and it so happens to be his last. Nearly his last.
His dad's a strong man, he'll survive. He's enlisted the help of Lydia to do so. Asked her to be the child he'll not get to be for him. Through teary eyes she had agreed, and he's watched the two of them get closer in their quest of trying to heal him, and then grieve him. She's like the daughter he never had, and she is good for him. Stops him from drinking alcohol and makes him healthy food, even when he refuses to listen, and Stiles can do nothing but lay on his bed as the voices float up from the kitchen.
Scott and him never did resolve their differences. Scott's been a part of his life enough to warrant him a last goodbye, and despite everything that has happened, Scott promised to him to be there for his dad. He promised many things, but has delivered none, and has only been by to see him on day one — when Stiles had allowed Lydia to bring in the McCall Pack to help him cure himself.
It's as if Stiles being dead was an accepted outcome for him, and Scott has grieved him to the point of utter indifference since. If he's grieving in silence that's another thing, but for now, Stiles isn't dead. People do come in and see him.
Lydia, of course. His dad. Jackson flew from London to come see him, and he hasn't left since, feet set like stone in Beacon Hills, despite the final acceptance of their failure. Isaac came with Jackson, and it's so silly, he thinks, that being on the verge of death can bring together people you would never see in one place by choice.
Kira has stopped by multiple times, as have Malia, Liam, Mason, Jordan, and surprisingly, Hayden. She insisted he's a hero, and cried while hugging him.
Scott hasn't come again. And, honestly, it's not as bothersome to Stiles as someone else not coming in to see him.
Cora has face-timed him, and Peter was there, he knows. The two of them were there, and when he'd asked about Derek, Cora had snapped out, "He's an idiot," while Peter had calmly told Stiles, "He's determined."
Stiles is smart enough to put together the fact that Derek has been pursuing his own leads to find the cure, but he'd hoped that once the finality of his situation reached him, he'd see Derek one last time.
He wouldn't burden Derek with the knowledge of his own feelings. Wouldn't confess like in the fairytales, and hope for a true love's miracle. Stiles is honest to himself these days, and he'd rather go with unconfessed feelings than burden Derek, because somewhere in their interactions, Stiles has developed a pure hatred for anything that could even remotely hurt Derek.
He supposes this is love, and how ironic is it, that this is the most intense feeling he's ever had, and he can't even speak aloud about it?
So he lounges in his bed, waiting for the light to take him. Each time he closes his eyes he knows he's closer to never opening them again, and tonight, as he hears Lydia turn the pages of a book, and Jackson walking outside in the hallway, and his dad sobbing in his own room, and Isaac cooking, he just wishes tonight's the night. He cannot have the people he care about clinging onto false hope.
He closes his eyes, and behind his eyelids, he sees his family. He sees his mom, beckoning him; his parents, smiling, as he runs towards them for a family hug; Lydia, when she told him she loves him in the Jeep, and the night when he came back, declaring that he's not supposed to leave her, ever; Jackson and Isaac laughing at his expense, but not in a mean way, instead enjoying each other's company like the friends they've become these days; Derek, as the last time Stiles saw him, smiling softly at him while he rambled on about the way he convinced the FBI to let him join the mission that saved Derek's ass.
He remembers, with immense clarity, the moment he realized he's in love with Derek. The heartbreak of saying goodbye to him, of watching his brows furrow at the clear lie of, "You should go," and hesitant step forward he'd taken before realizing it.
He'd said, "You should go or Cora will leave," and left the, "I want her to," unsaid.
He sleeps, and wishes to dream about a world where Derek didn't leave and things happened differently. Where somehow, they found their way to each other, and Stiles never got ill like this.
Instead, he dreams about a purple light guiding him to a tunnel that simply looks white, like that is all there is.
He follows.
He doesn't wake up, again.
At least, that's what he thinks — until his eyes open and he's face-to-face with —
"Derek?"
*
The whole place is white. The only splash of color exists on Stiles himself, his clothes rumpled with sleep, and on Derek, whose jeweled eyes are shimmering with unshed tears and sparkling joy.
"Derek, what the hell did you do?!"
Derek doesn't deem that a question worthy of replying. Instead the werewolf picks him up and hugs him so tight Stiles worries about not being able to breathe, and then realizes, with a startling clarity, that he is not in pain.
Still in embrace, he asks, a little choked up, "Why am I not in pain?"
Derek takes an exaggerated sniff before reluctantly pulling back and fixing him with a look that screams of resplendent joy, but also like he's waiting for a reprimand. He says, "This is Bardo."
Stiles stills. "Bardo," he repeats. He's dived into enough books to hear what Derek is leaving unsaid. Bardo is where spirits go after dying. It's an in-between space for spirits with unfinished business, one that opens only on a land with a Nemeton on it. Beacon Hills fits the criteria for it, and Stiles the criteria for having wishes he didn't get in his life, but he doesn't... He doesn't fit the other criteria. "Derek Nobody Will Tell Me What Your Middle Name Is Hale, that place — which apparently is this place, what the hell — is for supernatural spirits. Me?" He laughs, humorless and frantic. "I am not a supernatural creature. I'm just a human who used to run with a Pack."
Derek's worry melts away into nothing, as if Stiles would miss the fact that for Derek to be here, he has to be dead.
"Don't think I don't understand that you're dead, too! Deliberately!"
There. That is the face of a chastised puppy. "But it worked?" Stiles squints his eyes and motions for Derek to go on, who sighs but complies with the command. "The illness that took you was a Supernatural fever, last recorded with a Spark centuries ago. I tracked down the journal —"
"Wait, hold on, Spark? Where have I heard that word..." The Vet clinic, years ago. The Kanima in the club. The mountain ash line that never should have formed because there was much too less of it to complete the circle. As the realization hits, he closes his eyes and rests his fists against them. He isn't ashamed to let out a scream of rage as well.
When he lets his arms fall back down to his side, Derek takes one of them and starts rubbing comforting circles on the back of his hand. "You are one," he says softly, like he's trying not to spook Stiles with the declaration. Like Stiles' world didn't just shift irrevocably as he put the pieces together. "I don't really understand why your powers never unlocked, because traditionally speaking they should have kicked in your teen years. With the added clusterfuck of those years they definitely should have. They did not."
Again, he laughs humorlessly, and gives Derek a "duh" look. "Our lives have rarely dared to be traditional." He thinks back to all the awful things that have happened over the years to him, but mostly, as Derek put it, in those years. The Nogitsune was definitely the worst thing to happen to him, and holy shit. "Do you think it chose me because of my power? Rather than her?"
Derek doesn't answer for a moment. Then he says, "I think that is why you survived. Because of your Spark."
Oh. That... makes sense. Sort of. But that is the past, and they're in the present, and they're in fucking Bardo of all places. "Derek, I think I really need an explanation. Like right now. Including why you thought killing yourself was the best fucking idea."
Derek winces, but he also looks determined once Stiles' glare eases off of him. And they're still holding hands, which he realizes with a warmth he actually enjoys feeling. "When I got the call, I had an inkling... So I followed my instincts and ended up at probably our oldest vault."
"You knew what I am." He doesn't even feel angry. Somehow, Derek knowing a thing about him that nobody else does (and he is not counting Deaton as a factor here at all, that cryptic asshole), it feels nice.
Derek uses his free hand to tap at his chest, once, twice. "Instincts," he says, with the same effect as saying, "Werewolf," like he once used to, as if that was the answer to everything. "This illness confirmed it for me. I found a journal at the vault that belonged to that Spark, and in it, he detailed how the illness felt, how it spread, and how within weeks he could do nothing but lay on his cot." Derek swallows, his voice turning rough with choked up emotions. "Stiles, just reading it was so awful. I can't imagine..."
Derek Hale doesn't cry. He feels deeply, and he cares even deeper, but he doesn't cry, not in front of people.
But Stiles is not most people, and he is aware enough to know that he is, for some reason, one of the people who is most important to Derek. So as Derek breaks down at the idea of Stiles' suffering, Stiles reaches forward and brings his arms around Derek.
"I'm here," he assures, over and over again, until the words are stronger than Derek's shaking. "I'm right here," he says one last time, and stays close to the man he loves most for an indeterminate amount of time, silently not-breathing together.
Stiles breaks the silence with, "I love you, you know?" He had promised to not say it to Derek. To not burden him. But here they are, in Bardo. Together. A Pack of two who would do all that is possible and all that is not to protect the other. Derek deserves to know he is loved.
The way Derek's arms tighten around him says he doesn't know. And when Derek pulls back, just a little to stare at Stiles like this is unbelievable, Stiles pulls him back in by grabbing his hands and putting one on his chest, the other on his face. He kisses the inner palm of the latter, and smiles brightly. "Never thought I'd say it. Especially once I was on my deathbed. Still hate that you chose to die with me, but I'm hoping you have a plan, and you deserve to know. You're amazing and I love you, Derek Hale."
The smile he gets is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen, and Derek presses forward until their foreheads are resting against each other's. "Samuel," he says.
"Derek Samuel Hale? Samuel like Sam and Dean's grandpa?"
Derek does a snort-chortle thing, then says in the small space between them, "Shut up, Stiles."
"Shutting up."
The silence stretches, and they stay together, seizing the moment. Who knew Bardo could be peaceful? Except...
"Our escape plan? See, I'd love to explore you biblically anywhere and everywhere, but I would much rather do it on —"
"Stiles."
Derek's look of scandalized horror makes Stiles laugh until he's being hauled off in his strong, muscled arms like a sack of potatoes and starts walking. "I don't know why I love you too."
"This is just sexy. I don't think you know what you're doing to me."
"I can still smell your arousal, Stiles. I know."
"You know loads of things. What else do you know?" He says it in a simpering, sexy voice, and then giggles as Derek stumbles a step before balancing himself.
"I know how to escape. We need a bed, yes? So stop distracting me and let me do my thing."
Stiles is just glad he is already in Derek's arms, because otherwise he would have swooned and fallen into them.
The escape plan is easy and a let down, if he's being completely honest. What they need are:
A Spark's Belief ✅️
An Alpha's Roar ✅️ (When did Derek become an Alpha again?)
An Anchor on The Other Side ✅️ (Peter)
An Incantation That Derek Has Memorized ✅️
To Stand Where The Veil is Thinnest ✅️ (Derek's instincts strike yet again)
All in all, it is very anti-climactic, and very dirty as they end up materializing in a clearing near the Nemeton which is muddy. Peter looks one look at them and says, "Finally."
Stiles isn't sure if he meant it for them coming back or for Stiles and Derek finally confessing to each other. Either way, Peter hands them clean clothes and agrees to drive them back to Stiles' house, where apparently everyone is in a panic because "Stiles dissappeared."
"It's only been like, an hour or something," Stiles says, confused, as he changes into the clean t-shirt while Peter faces the other way and Derek stares, unabashed, much to Peter's verbal disgust.
Peter takes a break from chastising his nephew to say, "It's been 72 hours."
Huh.
"We should get going then," he says, and Peter sighs.
"If only you could ask my dear nephew to rein in his urges."
Stiles throws Derek a glare, who rolls his eyes but obliges. However the glare the turns into an appreciative look over Derek's abs, and Peter throws up his hands.
*
Acclimating to having magic is easy when he already has an anchor. Derek's presence is both wanted and needed, and despite Scott's insistence that another Alpha cannot stay in town, Derek stays as long as Stiles does.
Two weeks pass before Stiles calls back his boss and lets her know that he's now alright, and then he's promptly being shipped off to another state for a case. Everyone has already congratulated him on both being alive and doing something about his pining, so they throw a simple dinner on his last night in town and Stiles watches, with amusement and fondness, as all the people in his heart mingle with easy conversations and banter.
Peter chooses to stay in town to reconnect with Malia in person, while Cora deems it better to go back to her Pack in South America. Lydia and Jackson leave together for London, but Isaac decides to stay back.
When Stiles asks him why, he says, "Liam needs a good mentor. His control is weak. I can help him, plus, Derek needs a pack."
Stiles raises an eyebrow. "Liam is Scott's beta," he says.
"None of them have a pack bond," Isaac fire backs, and oh.
Derek must have heard the conversation, too, because he comes over and claps Isaac on the back, proud and all smiley, and Stiles can't help but lean in to kiss it. To taste the constant joy off of Derek's face, to give him his own in return. The action is met with Derek's soft moan and a ring of disgusted groaning from the others, including his dad's.
Stiles laughs after he pulls back, and looks around at the lot of them. There's tragedy woven into all of their lives, but there's also happiness.
Who knew getting ill would lead to this? To re-founding a family?
Maybe Derek knew, the bastard. Loveable bastard, though.
Because the universe is unfair, it gives Derek Hale a kitten. One that is just as black as his wolf fur, and just as scary looking until you manage to get close to her by a painstakingly long process of trust exercises and find that oh, she's the most adorable thing in the world, too.
See, Stiles is a realist. When constant skirmishes with one certain older werewolfman, where his life was equally threatened and saved by this said werewolfman, made his little Stiles happy to the point of constant little deaths in the not-so-privacy of his bedroom, he'd choked down the realization of not being so straight as he'd mistakenly thought. At the time, the sorrow of it had more to do with the fact that his crushes were always so unattainable rather than the fact that it was a man he was crushing on, one that his dad had arrested too. And then when his dad was brought into the fold of the hidden layer in their world, and he saw his dad recognize the real Derek, he knew he had his dad's permission.
His dad's always been a realist, too. Stiles' affection is anything but secret when it comes to Derek, because he deserves all the good things in the world, and despite his design to push and prod until the person Stiles is talking to comes undone and shares their secrets, Stiles has done anything but that with him. In the beginning, it was curiousity. It was his desire to know the unknown, to gather all the facts, to know enough to get over Derek Fuckin' Hale. Somewhere down the line, but very close to beginning, his feelings turned warmer, though. Glacier of ice melting into rivulets of water, carried away on a sea of emotions he'd denied himself to dip toes in for far too long.
And now that Derek's brought home a kitten he found abandoned near the Walmart, and named her Princess of all things, Stiles has been forced to take a fucking dive into that sea.
He makes a choked off sound when Derek, in the middle of the Loft, takes off his soft-looking, cozy green henley, and Stiles is assualted with the very vivid view of his gorgeous abs.
Derek opens his arms and Princess, deeming it her cue, climbs atop him, her little claws her little helpers, and Derek's enchanting smile Stiles' doom. Once she's nestled against his chest, he looks at Stiles. Another sound falls from Stiles' mouth, without his permission. It's a whine, he thinks; a call for help.
"You okay?"
O-K-A-Y. Four letter word, where sometimes the last two alphabets are unnecessary. Just like this question.
"What do you think!" Oh no. He needs to calm down. Princess is looking at him, her green eyes wide and anxious. Stiles whispers, hisses really, "Her! You! Henley!"
Derek looks at his little princess, then looks back at him. "You are not making sense, Stiles." Looks back at Princess, says, "Your Tata is acting crazy." Princess meows, as if in agreement, and oh fuck, seriously universe? Why should Derek look so damned adorable when he's just paying attention to his kitten like many others do! Hell, Peter was doing the same thing in the last pack meeting, and Stiles had thought nothing of it. But Derek does it, and it's like Stiles has discovered a whole new world of kinks. What the hell.
During Stiles' inner freakout, Derek has managed to sit on the couch, and now he's petting Princess, who is still attached to his chest like a barnacle. Why isn't Stiles a kitten?
Wait.
"DID YOU JUST ME CALL ME HER TATA?!"
Princess hisses quite venomously at him, probably at the volume of his voice, because Derek winces too. Oops. But no, not oops!
This is serious business.
He points a finger at Princess. "Don't talk to me like that young lady," he waggles his finger for emphasis. She follows it with her eyes, looks at Derek once, then settles down and watches him with wide, unblinking eyes. What an attitude on this one. Just like her dad, really. Who is... looking at him, the corner of his lips tilted up in amusement. "You. Words. Explain."
"Words are usually his thing," Derek tells Princess, who meows once in acknowledgment. Then he lifts his eyes towards Stiles and pats the free seat beside him. Stiles sits. "I am more of an action person."
And then Derek takes Stiles' hand and puts it on top of his other one, the one Derek's been using to constantly pet Princess. Stiles' breath stops for a moment at the touch.
"Is this okay?"
"More than," Stiles admits, and watches with awe as Derek's eye sparkle under the waning sunlight, the way his mouth stretches further up into a grin, unabashed and unbelievably pretty this close up. Stiles forms a grin in response too. "So," he says, playfulness creeping away the shock. "Since I am her Tata... I vote to name her Princess Leia."
Derek's laughter in response echoes through the Loft, and Princess makes her displeasure known at the vibrations on her comfy spot by jumping onto Stiles' chest. They remove their hands at the movement, and Stiles puts his hands back on her, lets her burrow in his chest. She's already in his heart, anyways.
"Stiles," Derek says when he's calmed down, only a minute later. Stiles isn't even offended; The sound of Derek's laughter is like eating candy. Like pure bliss. "That's already her name."
Stiles blinks.
Derek calls, "Leia, come to dad," and she goes.
"I love you so, so, so much, you don't even know, Derek Hale," the words come out, and he... is not afraid they're out there, because Derek has, once again, Princess Leia on his chest, and his left arm comes around Stiles' shoulders to pull him in towards himself.
Derek kisses the top of his head, and Stiles melts, and he is a realist, so when Derek replies, "I love you, too, so, so, so much," he knows he's done for life.
Stiles' heart will belong to no other, but Derek Hale.
As if reading his thoughts, Princess Leia meows, and Stiles amends his mental declaration: his heart will belong to no other, but Derek Hale, and the family they create.
IT IS FINALLY HERE! Inspired from this post of mine (of which i posted a sneak peak here)... now i bring to you, the FULL FIC ON A03.
Thank y'all for showing interest in it <3
Here is a little bit of sneak peak:
*
He settles beside Cora, stretches there so his legs open to create space for Stiles. Stiles, who doesn’t even glance at Scott calling his name, too busy in arranging the snacks, and then finding the remote. Derek waves it once, and Stiles beelines for it.
“I want it! I get to choose the film, ok Sourwolf, because I called this pack night!” As he says it, he’s moving forward, and it makes Derek’s heart soar that there’s no second thought before he plops himself down between the V of his legs. Derek hands over the remote.
And of course Stiles puts on Star Wars, Episode III.
“Why.”
“Inflection, Der, use them. They’re the souls—”
“—Souls of language. Yes, I know, Stiles. But I love to—”
“—love to fight against period, commas and question marks because I love to see you squirm.” Stiles recites perfectly, thanks to the number of times they’ve had this argument, and then corrects himself, “I mean, you love to see me squirm, you asshole!”
Somewhere distantly, he hears Scott mutter, “Yeah he is. Come here Stiles.”
Derek puts his free hand around Stiles’ waist and pulls him backwards into his chest, and Stiles lets him do it. He settles firmly in Derek’s lap, like this is the easiest thing to do. It makes Derek happy.
“Now shush, let me watch the credits in peace!”
Derek takes the remote and fast-forwards it.
“Nephew…”
“You’re an idiot,” Cora tacks on to their uncle's reprimand, and then, “Why do you never learn?”
Stiles simply takes the popcorn bowl from his hand and puts it in Cora’s hands. She swats away Boyd’s hands from taking any of it, and then sighs loudly as Derek and Stiles devolve into a wrestling, writhing mass of degenerates beside her.
Stiles emerges victorious and wins the remote, so Derek pulls him in by his hips and wraps his arms around his chest. Puts his head on Stiles’ right shoulder and groans when he rewinds the film back to the starting point.
“Idiot,” Cora mutters, and hands back the bowl of popcorn to Derek. He isn’t really sorry about it, though. And both Cora and Peter know it, so they send him knowing looks which he steadfastly ignores.
The movie begins again. Stiles cuddles closer to him, Derek’s hands on his chest, his hips. Enclosing him in. He turns his head, and their faces are so, so close. Their noses touch. Their eyes are cross-eyed they’re so infuriatingly, blessingly close. Stiles says, “Der.”
He pulls back and picks up a handful of the popcorn, more salty ones than tomato flavored ones — they’re more his favorite, not Stiles’ — from where he’d kept the bowl between him and Cora, and feeds Stiles one by one.
Once the handful of popcorn has been eaten, Stiles turns back, and Derek picks up his own handful. A couple minutes pass by, the world on the screen the only noise, but then Stiles turns around again. He doesn’t say anything, but Derek understands anyways and feeds Stiles. It makes him satisfied in a way he’s both thrilled and concerned about, which basically sums up his life. But in this moment he focuses on Stiles, and the intimacy of their trust, the way Stiles allows him to provide for him. The way Stiles trusts him with these small things, and when it matters, with the big things. Like Stiles’ life.
This time, a murmur kick starts between the betas. Mainly Isaac and Erica, who are trying to tamp down their curiosity but are unable to do so. Boyd isn’t into the gossip, but Derek sees him watching them a couple of times.
On the other hand, he can smell Scott silently fuming, and Allison’s gentle scraping along his scalp, his arms. Trying to control him. Anchoring him. Derek smirks, unable to help the way his chest expands with possessive pride.
“What’s up?” Stiles asks, without turning. His eyes are locked onto the screen.
“Nothing. Just the popcorn’s almost over.” It is. They’re down to two handfuls each.
Stiles pauses the film, never one to miss even a second of it, and scans the coffee table. It’s still full with food. He frowns. “Nobody is eating?”
Nobody is replying, either. Stiles stands up and hovers beside the table, looks at Derek helplessly. He’d brought everyone’s favorite and some extra — he’d planned this down to every last detail. Except, of course, realizing that they don’t know about his and Derek’s history, or their current friendship.

The hand in his hair is gently rough. Thumb and pointer finger cascading through his short hair, resting intermittently at the nape of his neck. Strong, soft grip tugging him forward into slick, sweet lips. He bites, and the hand on his hair stops for a moment, before starting again, insistent.
He giggles, and the lips against his own fans into a responding smile.
"Beautiful," Derek murmurs, the smile turning brighter, hands moving downwards. Down to the small of his back, his waist. Both hands on his hips, then up, then down again. Continuous, ravenous, wandering hands.
Stiles' response is another bite, a successor to drinking in the absolute sunshine from this ethereal man he gets to call his own. His own hands are resting on Derek's body: one on his bicep, the other on his waist.
Their hands entwine between them, a gesture and a promise. Their kisses halt, words of affirmation cascading against the other: oaths to be at the other's side, to always be there, to chase down the other if need be.
Oath of always being honest. To never let themselves be more of an idiot and let happiness be kept at bay because of assumptions.
"I'm glad you found me," Derek whispers against his skin, their closeness new but centuries old. Stiles' spit-pink lips glisten under the moonlight, his heart jumps with joy. He strokes Derek's back, the henley warm to the touch, despite the slightly chilly wind.
"When am I ever wrong?"
Another smile, a soft curve up of the lips. He knows how the taste and feel of them, now. "Never." The word is punctuated by a kiss on his nose, followed by a peck on his lips.
Stiles' response is to pull Derek back for another kiss.
Behind them lies the seldomly travelled road, his blue jeep parked haphazardly in the middle; argument and a nearly-dead Derek in his passenger seat had been like old times, but his determination to save and Derek's to be let go had been ten-fold. He had won, and Derek had stumbled away from him, in the middle of nowhere, and he had followed.
He'll always follow, and be at Derek's side, a truth so stark it is written in the stars. A truth so everlasting it will live as long as the universe is alive. And yet, Derek had resisted it, argued against it.
The argument had turned into a desperate effort — his to convince, Derek's to not ruin him.
Stiles still doesn't know how he'd gotten through. It does not matter, now. Derek is in his arms, convinced, happier, his.
It is enough. Although...
"It's getting colder."
"Of course it is. It's winter and the middle of the night."
"Don't give me that look, you're the one who decided jumping out a moving vehicle would be the best course of action."
"Again: your anxious scent and my own assumptions aren't a good mix, Stiles."
"But you, me, and a motel are, right?"
Derek's cheeks are definitely pink, though he can't really see it. The moonlight isn't enough. "Stiles!"
"What?" His grin is mischievous, he can admit it. He doesn't need Derek's judgy eyes to tell him that. "You need sleep, I need sleep, and I need a heater, since not everyone of us here is an awoooo."
Derek rolls his eyes, hands reaching for Stiles' which he readily gives. Except, Derek is a cheeky bastard, and soon Stiles finds himself in a bridal carry towards his own jeep. "This awoo will show you what a personal heater is."
"More ooo sound," he corrects, just as Derek dumps him in the passenger seat — sticky with blood, ugh — and the only response he gets is a head shake before the driver's side door is being opened.
"I don't know why I like you." Derek starts the jeep — the engine switched on throughout, never turned off in the first place — and turns to look at him. Whatever Derek sees, it brings a small, genuine smile on that gorgeous, tired face. "That's a lie."
The whispered confession makes him blush, and he's back to being seventeen with an unattainable crush, concocting scenarios to make the impossible happen. Except, now, the impossible has happened, and he'd like to let the younger Stiles know that.
Derek eases the jeep onto the road, and Stiles eases his hand onto Derek's, their fingers entwined, their hearts in sync, and the cold of the wind thawing with the warmth of their love.
based on a reel i saw on instagram lol. changed the narrative a bit to fit the characters.
Stiles' eyes track Merlin's, towards the corner of the massive ballroom, where two men are standing with their hands crossed against their chest. Their side-profile are almost identical: crisp, tailored black suits, accentuating their biceps, broad shoulders, and tantalizingly shaped body figures. Even their heights seem to be the same; the only notable difference from this angle is the color of their hair: a dark, deep, raven onyx versus a golden halo.
"They're arguing about something."
"Yes," Merlin sips his drink, the one he's claimed several times into the evening to be a disgusting piece of beverage, and winces. "I don't know why I keep drinking it."
"That's because Arthur brought it for you," Stiles tells him with a knowing smile. "And you won't deny him the pleasure of serving you, no matter how awful the taste might be."
Merlin looks at the gaudy, unneeded, and entirely unnecessary piece of diamond ring that Derek gifted him for this evening. It's almost the same size as his engagement ring, and it sits prettily enough on his left hand's pointer finger. Merlin catches his eye with a gentle smile on his own face.
"Arthur and I share something special," he begins, voice lilting into the foreign accent Stiles hasn't been able to place yet. It sounds like Welsh, but different than the one he knows. Older. "For a long time I thought my devotion to him wouldn't be reciprocated, and it was fine. I was fine with it. But as always, the clotpole had other ideas." Clotpole. What the hell does that even mean? Merlin's chuckle brings him back to what he is saying, "—told him, and so, now Arthur thinks he must make it up to me."
"Or he just loves you very, very much, but has awful taste."
"That, too."
They'd turned towards each other for the conversation, the din of the hall loud enough to keep it private from prying ears, but now they turn. Someone just gasped, and they're both most definitely into drama from the sidelines.
"Oh my god."
"Are they— ARTHUR!"
"DEREK SEBASTIAN HALE!"
Both men freeze. The old lady who gasped turns to look at them, as does the rest of the room, but Stiles isn't paying them any heed, and neither is Merlin. No. Their focus is entirely on their idiots.
Arthur's left hand is fisted at Derek's tie, and his right hand is frozen near his waist, crooked fingers looking for purchase. Weirdly, Stiles likens this action with looking for a sword in its scabbard, tightened securely near hips.
On the flip side, Derek's got his right hand centimeters from Arthur's nose, while his left one must be aiming to intercept Arthur's sword-hand or whatever.
And their faces. Oh Jesus Christ, their faces.
Red with anger. Mouths open in a feral cry of war. And eyes? Stuck on Stiles and Merlin, fear melting their rage.
Both him and Merlin stride towards them, Merlin's glass of questionably purple drink handed to one of the catering staff, and it's as if their movement reminds Arthur and Derek that they're caught. They jump apart, though they do share a look of commiserating grief over being caught.
Bastards. United against spousal anger.
Merlin and him don't say anything in this hall with interested ears and human eyes and multitudes of equipment ready to immortalize this scene; they simply take their respective husband's hands in their own and drag them out towards the parking lot, which happens to be mostly empty. Still, they go in deeper towards a secluded corner.
Once there, Stiles stares their Derek down, hands back at his sides. Merlin does the same.
"So? Care to elaborate what the fuck that was about?" His question is met nervous breathing and another commiserating look. "Oh, so now you're both buddy-buddy, but inside the hall you two were — what, enemies?" He snorts. He can't help it; Derek and him have faced literal monsters, and yet Derek was about to fight a posh, young man for... some reason?
Before either of them can speak, Merlin narrows his eyes. "Wait. Was this a ruse?"
"A ruse? What do you mean, Merlin?"
"Your royal pratness, by that I mean a very elaborate scheme to leave that dull place with questionable drinks and—"
Arthur's face goes from confused to dull. "Did you not like the Favor?"
"Favor?" Merlin question's, and Stiles shoots Derek a look to shush. Why the hell is he finding this so funny?
"That's what the drink was called. And it was purple. It wasn't nice? So I..." Arthur's gaze turns wide. "And you still drank it all! I even brought you a second glass of it, why didn't you tell me you didn't like it?"
Merlin rubs the back of his neck, a sheepish gesture. When no answers seem forthcoming from him, Stiles steps in.
"It was thoughtful, I guess, since I'm gonna assume purple and that name means something to you both?" They nod in assent. "Right. See, thoughtful gifts are nice... but not always. Like, maybe you like it, but Merlin wouldn't. And it's not a bad thing at all, you just need to communicate."
Merlin rolls his eyes. "Says the man who hates the diamond ring gifted to him."
Stiles hisses, "Hey!" at the same time Derek asks, voice small, "Stiles?"
He turns towards his husband, moves closer. "Hey, it's nice. It's a very good gift."
Arthur says, weirdly with glee, "Which you don't like!"
"I love the thought behind it though!"
"But you don't like it," Derek repeats, eyes on Stiles', daring him to lie again.
Stiles cups his face, rubs his thumb against his stubble. "No," he admits. "I don't."
"I think we have gone a bit off-track here," Merlin says, after a while. Stiles turns to see the other couple in a similar position: in an almost-embrace, an intimate moment shared. "Why were you two at each other's throats?"
A third look is shared between Derek and Arthur. Then, Derek says, "It was about what that lady asked us."
"Yeah."
Merlin and Stiles wait for further elaboration, one which doesn't come. Now they share a look, and take a step to move away from their respective embraces. That, apparently, does the trick, and Arthur continues from his monosyllable answer, neither of the men letting Merlin or Stiles leave their personal space in the process.
"She asked us, 'What's the most expensive thing you've ever eaten?' and we told her. We disagreed at each other's answer, though."
"This was done over a trivial question? Derek. What the hell."
"I wonder how bigger your head can grow, Arthur. Really?"
Derek leans in close to him and tells him, in almost his Alpha voice, "My answer was you."
Stiles blinks. Huh? "Huh?" And then, "Oh my god—"
"And I said you," Arthur adds. "Of course, my Merlin is more expensive than your husband."
"I said this, and I'll say this again: Stiles is literally wearing the most expensive set of clothes right now on this side of the coast, he's wearing two diaomond rings, and that's just today's outfit."
Both Derek and Arthur push him and Merlin behind them, and move closer to each other, gearing up for a fight. Again.
"Unappreciated gifts don't count, and my husband is wearing a neckerchief made of the most pure gold, and that's just one of them!"
Stiles and Merlin look at each other.
"I had no idea this suit was that fucking expensive," he tells the man, who is eyeing up his own neckerchief in betrayal.
"You said this was just the color gold!"
"Merlin, we're leaving. Let's go."
"Yes. They can duke it out between themselves, while we enjoy this evening with people who tell us the truth."
They turn around, and start walking back towards the ballroom. Behind them, the fight never occurs. Instead, pounding footsteps follow them, and really, this evening did not go how Stiles had envisioned it to be.
(Lydia tells them a week later that "Derek Hale and Arthur Emrys begging their partners for forgiveness in the charity gala" is still a solid opening hit for a conversation, and Merlin rolls his eyes before his eyes glow gold and his favorite chips appear in his hand.
Because apparently, they're the Merlin and Arthur: Magic itself, and the Once and Future King.
Stiles' own eyes glow a deep purple, and both him and Lydia now have their favorite drinks in their hands.
Meanwhile, Derek's authority and Arthur's ego clash over something else equally trivial in the kitchen. Hopefully their bickering won't get in the way of dinner.
If it does... oh well. A Spark and The Sorcerer can cook something, can't they?
And no, both him and Merlin have decided that in no way, shape, or form, are they telling their husbands that the fact that their arguments occur mostly over being the 'better husband' is adorable. Nope, never, ever.)
He follows the laughter down the hallway, feet quiet, a smile blooming on his face. The coffee in his hand is hot. A monstrosity is what it is, really, too bitter to taste anything like sewage water to him, but it's not for him.
He'll be drenched in world's worst sewage water if that's what it takes for him to be in Derek's life forever. But that's a devotion not yet ready to burst out of his heart, unlike the wheezing, red-faced, voluminous laughter he can hear coming from the library towards the corner-most area of the ground floor.
His presence goes unnoticed for the moment, body hidden beside the slightly ajar door, eyes peeking in. Little Lyle is sitting on his favorite-deemed blue beanbag, and in front of him are a couple of books, all children's, all open to pictures of particularly grumpy looking old men. Beside a very confused, mostly laughing (copying his elders, though this elder is a questionable one) Lyle is Stiles, both hands clutching his stomach, his long body spread half-and-half across his own green beanbag and the marble flooring.
Derek drinks the moment in, breathes in the scent of utter joy. Revels in it. Joy has the sweetest scent, crisp with meaning, and somehow, Stiles' is the crispiest, like a perfectly stolen moment in time. It's only when he thinks Stiles just might die by laughter — still intensely brimming with it, soft giggles breaking through — that he steps inside the library.
Lyle sees him first, all enthusiasm and energy. "Unca Der!"
"My favorite nephew," he says back, matches the tone of the little boy. Barely two and already larger than life. Lyle leaves his beanbag for a sprint across the short distance, jumps up in his arms. It's only his quick reflexes that saves the cup of coffee, diligently put on a nearby shelf, carefully away from the books themselves — Peter likes to keep the books a little bit pushed in, the massive shelf-space large enough to fit two books over that way — and captures the little boy against his body.
"Da only nephew!"
Derek laughs, too. "Yes." It is true. Laura only has one kid, and he might just be the only one for now.
"I've got something to show you!" Stiles' voice is high-pitched now, the hard laughter drowned to softer giggles, and as Derek positions themselves towards him, Lyle taps his chest, makes him look back at him, wide blue eyes as big as Camden's.
"Lilly Liles," he says, pointing at Stiles.
"When isn't Stiles silly?"
"Har har," the sarcasm is lost in the throes of the giggles, and Derek knows Stiles knows it. Still, Derek lets Stiles guide him towards Lyle's previously occupied beanbag. Lyle himself seems ready to bolt, now all done with Liles being lilly, and running around the house is infinitely better than being cuddled up in arms. He squirms, so Derek kisses him on his little forehead and loosens the hold, lets the boy get down and leave the library. Laura's still out with their mom, Pack business that didn't require the Left-Hand or the upcoming Left-Hand, but Camden is home. Derek still keeps an ear out for Lyle, the little troublemaker that he is. Definitely Laura's kid — Camden was never this rowdy as a child.
"I brought you coffee."
As soon as the words are out, the cup is floating towards Stiles' waiting hand. Instead of saying "Thank you," like anyone else, Stiles says, "Your nephew is my favorite Hale now. His humor? Oh my god, Der, you gotta learn comedic timing from him!" He takes one whole sip before continuing, "Like, we were just reading some books, and I wanted to teach him about different type of animals—" Derek pointedly looks at the open kid's books, which are decidedly not about animals at all, and raises his eyebrow. Stiles elects to flap his hands at him and spill a bit of coffee on the floor before using his magic for mopping it up. "All clean. Anyways, yes, I see what you see. Where are the animals, Stiles? All I see are grumpy men here. Arrgh."
"Your me impression has never gotten better. I don't even know why you try."
"Your eyes sparkle when I do." Shit. This shit's the kind of stuff Stiles says without realizing, most times, and every time Derek's heart chooses to jump and twirl around in his heart. "Lyle is literally a comedic genius. We were looking at wolves, and then we were done with that book, so I told Lyle to identify and bring me more. Guess what he brought. Guess guess guess!"
Derek points to one of the books lying about. "Old grumpy men?"
"Old grumpy men! Ask me why Derek. Ask me ask me ask me."
"Sometimes I wonder who is the kid."
"Derek."
"Stiles."
Their eyes meet, like they always do, and it's a challenge. For Stiles, it's a staring contest. For Derek, it's a lesson how not to drown in those honey-sweet amber eyes.
Derek cracks first, because how could he not?
He rolls his eyes theatrically, hoping the intensity of his sigh will bury the thump-thump-thump of his heart. "Why."
Stiles grins. "Good enough, but we need to work on that. Now, as for why, Derek? See, Lyle is a baby, the cutest lil baby I just wanna gobble-up—"
"You're not a chicken, and my nephew is not a piece of grain."
"You just don't know what cutness aggression is, you heathen."
"You're the one threatening cannibalism and I'm the heathen? How many times have you hit your head today?"
"How is Lyle even related to you. You have like, no funny bone in your body, dude."
Derek resists the urge to say, "Don't call me dude." Or even, "I have a funny bone in my body. It's the one which has fallen for my best friend and pack's future emissary, alongwith my heart." Except, you know, he doesn't.
So Stiles continues. "Anyways, as I was saying before you so rudely interrupted me. Lyle is the cutest baby ever, and I was teaching him about different types of animals, so I thought hey, let's start with wolves! So I got him a couple of wolfie books, with pictures of wolves. Lyle is a very good student, by the way. Took the information like a champ. Even pointed to himself every single I said "Werewolf" and the pictures when I only said "Wolf." Smart kid. Then I told him to bring more books, so he brought the old grumpy men ones, which, I don't even know why those are there? Seems like emotions books to me but fish sticks if I know."
Derek snorts. "Fish sticks?"
"You have no say, Mr. Apple Bottom."
"Kid's soap are the best for your skin, you should try it." Not that Stiles really needs to. His skin is already nice. The nicest. "And I like the scent of apples, sue me."
"Oh, Lyle is gonna. He keeps saying you steal, by the way. Wonder what's that about." Derek shrugs. Kid says a lot of things. Not all of it makes sense. "Steal with an f too. Sorta sounds like feel."
"Must be something Laura's teaching him."
"Could be. Now! Back to my thing. Stop interrupting me, Der, that's not nice." Stiles claps his hands and takes a swig out of the still floating cup of coffee. "Lyle brings all these, and I'm like, these aren't wolves. And he's like, no, they're werewolves. So I go nuh-uh, Lyle, these are just men." Here, the laughter comes back, and who knows why Derek knows Stiles to this extent, but he knows the incoming joke. Knows it before Stiles even tries finally explain it to him, but he waits, still listens with an air of shock. "He says... this is so funny... he says the grumpy men are Unca Der and he's a werewolf so these men are therefore also wolves! Obviously not in these exact words but..."
And there he goes again, laughing like the maniac Derek has always loved. Derek laughs, too, but only because Stiles' joy is infectious, and he's greedy to soak it all in.
Maybe one day he'll tell Stiles. One day he'll risk the current safety net for something better — a chance, to be Stiles', in more than just friendship. But for today, Stiles laughs at Derek's expense, and Derek laughs alongwith him.
