In the low lands of Maricopa County in AZ you can find The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Native American Community. It's comprised of 2 tribes; the Pima, or "Akimel Au-Authm," (River People), & the Maricopa, or "Xalychidom Piipaash," (People who live toward the water). The reservation sits in a sadden & yet beautiful land of abandoned & burned down houses that decay along a striving community. When a family member dies in a house, it's abandoned & burned down with most of their material goods still inside. It's believed that when this is done, the spirit will be free to live on in the afterlife. These living quarters are littered with personal & intimate belongings that give you a small view on a family members past life. While on this shoot there was an uneasy & haunting feeling that came over me in every new place we visited. Located in Red Butte, off a dirt road and hidden in the past is the remains of an airport that hides a rich aviation history which include guests such as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Erhardt. This location close to Grand Canyon National Park is where Parker VanZandt, William Stout and partners decided to built Scenic Airways Inc. in 1928. This area was the original Grand Canyon airport. The huge hanger, bunker, & 1 of the townhouses still stand. As other places like the Great House were dismantled or destroyed. VanZandt's dream was to connect to every national park by air, but the Great Depression hit & Scenic Air Inc. had to close their doors. Grand Canyon Airlines re-opened the airport in 1930. Up until the 1960's this airport and buildings were used to house employees & guests who wished to see the Grand Canyon from above. Through the 1970's this area was used for ranchers & their livestock up until 2005. Since then this area sat empty as nature took it’s toll. In 2006 this airport was added as National Register of Historic Places.
