江戸時代から親しまれてきた梅園 – [Kagawa Feb. 19-20] Ritsurin Garden Japanese Apricot Trees I went to see ume (Japanese Apricot) blossoms at Ritsurin garden, Takamatsu city, Kagawa pref., Japan. There are about 150 Japanese apricot trees within the gardens; about 70 trees are planted in the north grove and about 70 trees in the south grove. The south grove was called “hyakkaen (garden of a hundred kinds of flowers)” during the Edo period, and the Japanese apricot trees were planted there since then. The north grove has been planted since the Meiji period and it contains a sample tree that is being observed by the local Takamatsu meteorological observatory. Because most of the current trees have been planted since 1945, many trees estimated to be 50 – 60 years old can be observed here. The Japanese apricot blossom season is from the end of January to the middle of March, which means they can be enjoyed for a long time.
