The straw circle is called a chinowa (茅の輪). You walk through it in three loops (left, right, left) to cleanse any impurities picked up during the first half of the year, and to pray for good health in summer. Shōin Shrine ↑ also added Tanabata wishes, and wind chimes behind the chinowa and in their moss garden.
