Pork rice set meal (spicy option)
Mum’s Teriyaki Chicken & Ebi Bento (S$5.50) comes with fried chicken cutlet with teriyaki sauce and two breaded prawns deep-fried till golden-brown and crispy. I went with Teriyaki Chicken & Takoyaki Bento (S$5) with the same fried chicken cutlet. For the three Takoyaki balls, you can choose between octopus or scallop though I doubt they are giving you the real scallop, hence I chose octopus.
Mum loves the food from this Japanese/Korean stall near our home. We patronized the stall often as their bento sets are very reasonably priced. Take for example, this Teriyaki Chicken & Ebi Bento (S$5.50+S$0.30) cost less than six bucks as do this Spicy Pork & Ebi Bento.
Since I was also tasked to buy back dinner for mum and sis, I made a detour to the coffee shop further down the street to buy from the Japanese/Korean stall. The Saba Fish Bento (S$5.50+S$0.30 for the container) comes with half a fish, white rice and kimchi. If you are dining in, you also get a bowl of miso soup.
On the other hand, for the Teriyaki Chicken & Ebi Bento (S$5.50+S$0.30) you get slices of fried chicken cutlet with teriyaki sauce, two crispy breaded prawns, white rice, pickled vegetables and mayonnaise.

The three of us are all having the bento sets from the Korean/Japanese fusion stall located in the 24-hour coffee shop a stone throw away. My camera loves variations so here goes. :D Mum had Saba Fish Bento, sis took the Saba Fish & Chicken Bento and I opted for the Teriyaki Chicken & Saba Fish Bento. See the kimchi and pickled vegetable differences on the three bento? My colleague explained that because the first two are Koreans and the last one is Japanese. Do you agree with her explanation?
To coincide with Lunar New Year, KFC Singapore launched the Chicken Bak Kwa Burger 🐓🥓🍔 and Chicken Bak Kwa Crunch. Available for a limited time from 24 January to 22 February 2024. The Chicken Bak Kwa Crunch featured Hot & Crispy Chicken 🐓 coated with smokey Bak Kwa 🥓 seasoning powder and and topped with Bak Kwa bits.
I had the Chicken Bak Kwa Burger Meal 🍱 (S$9.95) with the burger, Sweet Potato Fries 🍠🍟 and Sjor Mango Peach 🥭🍑 drink. Burger came in a bright red box for that “Huat” (prosperity) feeling. Without lifting up the top bun, this looks no different from the normal Zinger burger. The bak kwa 🥓 bits are made from chicken and not the usual pork as our KFC is certified halal. The crispy Zinger fillet is coated with a smoky and savoury seasoning, giving the burger 🍔 a peppery kick. But the chicken had been dry and tough ever since KFC reduced the thickness of the fillet. While the bak kwa bits tasted decent, they can’t compare to the authentic version made from pork. I find that KFC Singapore should just stick to doing fried chicken as their burgers are lackluster compared to their closest competitors. I used to love their juicy Zinger burger but cost cutting destroyed it making it dry and tough to swallow.

McDonald’s Singapore introduced these two new burgers - Sweet ‘N Sour Fish Burger and Sweet ‘N Sour Chicken Burger on the 28th December 2023. Also new on the menu are the HA! Chicken Drumlets, Pineapple Coconut Frappé and a new soft serve ice cream cone.
Just nice that mum is not cooking so I went to get the Sweet 'N Sour Fish Feast (S$13.05) and topped up S$1.65 for a small Pineapple Coconut Frappé. The set meal itself came with a medium fries and two pieces of the new HA! Chicken Drumlets which is the classic prawn paste chicken. The Sweet ‘N Sour Fish Burger has two fish fillets, a slice of juicy pineapple, aromatic crispy shallots, julienned mixed vegetables and a miserable dollop of the sweet and sour sauce between soft glazed buns. It is almost like the previous Black Pepper Cheese Filet-O- Fish but with the change of the veggies and sauce to give it a tangy and sweet taste profile.
For dessert I had the Kueh Bangkit Cone (S$1.20) which I had ate it while waiting for my takeaway burger meal to be packed. The twin cones I had brought mum along the next day to let her enjoy it. Sorry about the latter photo’s colour representation as the mixed fluorescent and incandescent lightings are hard to edit for. I was a little skeptical about how they going to incorporate the traditional Kueh Bangkit snack into an ice cold dessert but the creamy mix of pandan and coconut flavour paired with crispy cone turned it into a truly in-kueh-dible delight.
