#set aside

The unbelieving world will yield no ground on their cardinal doctrines. If you’re tempted to let your convictions on men’s and women’s roles, sexuality and gender, or the absolute right to life for the unborn be swayed by some notion that, “Oh, if we could just be more sensitive, or less dogmatic, or take a more compromising, mediating view, we’ll have a better chance of building bridges and reaching those who disagree with us,”—you’re on a fool’s errand.

The political and theological left demands unswerving allegiance—total assimilation—to the dogmas of politically correct orthodoxy.

If you’re willing to sacrifice faithfulness for cultural influence or respectability, you’ll find yourselves being neither faithful to Scripture nor respected by the culture. At some point you’ll have to choose between offending postmodern sensibilities or offending the Lord Jesus Christ whose Word speaks so clearly on these matters.

Grief raised me. Grief shaped who I am in such subtle and dramatic ways that I have no idea who I would have been otherwise. I know loss intimately, but it never hurts less. It only grants perspective, like it hurts ,but further away, maybe. It’s like viewing a massive disaster from miles away compared to viewing it from a distance that’s safe, but only barely, so close and so big you can’t even see it all at once.

I think more people than one would expect can say that they were raised by grief, because life is death is life. Still, it doesn’t change much, knowing pain. Knowing the steps of the grieving process doesn’t grant you a cheat code to skip straight to acceptance next time. And if you could, that would be it’s own tragedy, to choose not to feel it. Pain demands to be felt.

But yes, perspective changes. Here’s a little one: exposure to euthanasia on a day-to-day basis has granted me the perspective that a painless death surrounded by those who loved you is a gift. Everyone has to go sometime, may as well be on a soft blanket. Death is life is death.
