Mt. Sesean: land inbetween clouds
Located on the highland on South Sulawesi, Toraja never bore me with its ambiance and mystique atmosphere it has.Paddy Terraces, Tongkonan, buffalo fights, graveyards, and their coffees named one of the best in the world This time, I went to a hike with friends to Mount Sesean. It is located in Batutumonga, a bit north from rantepao, the Torajan town. Headed to Toraja with a bus from Soroako at dawn, I arrived after midday, and headed directly to the Head of Village's house in Batutumonga, where the hike started. It took around one hour from Pasar Bolu (the market where I stopped), using public pete-pete (local public transportation that functioned similar like shuttle), to the house. There were 7 posts in Mount Sesean including the one near the summit, and people usually set up their tent in Post 6, where the last spring is located. We plan to hike until post 6 for the first day, before having the summit attack and get down the day after. This 2100 mdpl high Mountain is a favorite among beginner hikers, since it's not too high too climb, and the track is also bearable. We met several other hikers along our way, mostly junior or senior high students from local or nearby town of Palopo. Many of them camped without setting any tent, they planned to sleep under the big rock and on the ground, using only their saroong and hoodies. Never occur in my mind I could survive like they could. It's not freezing, but dawn temperature could reach 5-10 degrees! enough said that bring a tent is a must. "One of the Hiking Track"
Post 6 where we were staying for the night popular for other reasons and not only for its spring. It is the best spot to watch the sunrise, and the view of rantepao city lights at night. Too bad it was quite cloudy that few stars were seen on the sky. even so, the spot still gives me nice views and since the land were pretty moderate and were surrounded by higher hills, it was the perfect spot to set out our tents. "The Tents"
The next morning, after the sunrise and breakfast, we continue our journey to the top. the track to the top was narrow, and there were steep cliff by our sides. Carrying a 12Kilos carrier on my first hike gave me a bit anxiety if I could go home without falling from the edge, haha. I am quite fearful of height, anyway. "The Cloudy Sunrise, still a good view"
After a quite fast hike (no kidding, less than 2 hours) from post 6 to the top, we took some rest and finished our snacks and took a little nap. I mean, we didn't really want to get down the mountain and prefer to wait until the fog went away before going back. Was pretty peaceful at the top, despite the fact that we were standing/sitting just by the edge of a rock cliff. "At the Top of Mount Sesean"
It took us only half of our hiking times to get down, and the view was stunning, even with some clouds hanging. It was a really good time, indeed.
