One of the hostesses is being "promoted": She's still a hostess, but she's going to start doing carryout on the weekends. But she doesn't know a damned thing about the menu, or really about Italian food in general. So she came to me and said, "Paul, can you teach me about the menu?"
And I said sure, I already had some training materials made up that I distributed to the staff during the last menu update, so that they could all promptly ignore the information. I asked her if she wanted those, or something else. And she said that she wanted something else, something just for her.
And then I said to her, "How autistic do you want me to get about the food? Scale of 1-10." And she said, "10". And I went, "Okay, you asked for it."
So now I am typing up a new training guide for her, going into obsessive levels of detail about everything. I am fifteen pages in, and I haven't even gotten out of the appetizer portion of the menu yet. It is full of swearing and my frank opinions about the food, the customers, and the staff.
This is going to be my masterpiece.

Today's work fit ✨️💙
i don't think a lot of people realize that not tipping a server often means they literally lose money. it's not just they make zero dollars in tips. they often have to pay out of pocket to the restaurant when you don't tip. this is because of something called tip pool, where a certain percentage of the check (usually between 2-5%) is automatically taken out of the tip and then divided up amongst the other staff, like the kitchen and hosts. for instance, if your bill is 50$ and the tip pool is 5% (which is what it was at my former job), tip pool will be 2.5$. that means that if you tip 15%, the server will actually only receive 5$, or a 10% tip. however, when you don't tip, that percentage is still taken, just out of the servers pocket. so in the previous case of a 50$ bill with 5% tip pool, your server will be paying 2.5$ of their own money to the restaurant.
if you don't tip, you are making your server pay for you. this is why servers get so pissed when people don't tip, alongside the fact that they are severely underpaid, sometimes not even making minimum wage without tips in places with tipped wage. yes, restaurants know this, but tip pool only affects their employees, not their bottom line. they refuse to properly pay any of their staff, so they rely on taking from servers to pay everyone else.
not tipping your server isn't going to solve the issue. all you're doing is making the underpaid employee pay out of pocket while your actual bill pads the pockets of the ones who set this system up. if you want to actually help, push for workers rights in restaurant work, and complain to owners directly to tell them to pay their workers more. and when you go out to eat, tip your server. they don't make the calls. they just deal with the brunt of it.
