I stroll through the neighborhood, waving at my angel’s elderly neighbor, even offering to carry her bags upstairs when I reach the apartment complex. Just like a good guy would do.
“That’s so kind of you, young man,” the woman coos, and I nod, giving her a soft smile. It’s like I’m living a different life when I’m in my angel’s world. Until the dark thoughts come back, and I’m driving toward my dark path once again.
For months I paced back and forth, trying to avoid thinking about Y/N’s past and the people hurting her. It’s like I’m a man possessed, eager to punish, kill and bathe in their blood to rise from the ashes of their death, to become a new man.Â
To be free of her past. To start anew with my angel. To find a better meaning in life than to take another human being’s last breath.
“Dean, my angel,” she squeals, jumping into my arms. “I—I got a huge tip today. You know, it’s not usual to give a librarian a tip but that woman was so thankful for my help. She was one of those rich elderly ladies, but a nice one.”
“I’m happy for you, sweetheart,” I take her bags too, smiling when Y/N helps her neighbor to unlock her door whilst I wait to carry the bags into the apartment.
“Aw, Y/N. You’ve got such a nice husband,” her neighbor coos and I feel my heart speed up as Y/N agrees, nodding eagerly. “One day, you must come over and I’ll make you my infamous apple pie, young man.”
“My Dean loves pie,” my angel says softly, grasping for my hand to hold it tightly. “He’ll eat a slice with pleasure, Mrs. Fraser. Just not today. I will cook today, and he will be full of food soon.”
“Of course, my dear,” Mrs. Fraser sighs dreamily. “Young love, such a joy to experience and to watch it grow.”
“Oh, I—” Y/N giggles at Mrs. Fraser’s words. She presses her face in my upper arm, sighing softly.Â
“If you need help again, just holler, ma’am,” I offer, knowing an elderly people can be too stubborn or ashamed to ask for help. “We live right next door, don’t be afraid to ask.”
“You made me pie,” my voice cracks seeing my angel carry a plate with pie into the living room. She sits next to me, smiling as I take the plate out of her hands.Â
“Cherry pie,” she says. “I remembered you once told me you like it. Uh—I tried to remember everything you ever told me. You are special to me Dean.”
“You are special to me too,” I mumble, eyes glued to her lips. “I want you to know I’d do anything to keep you safe and make you feel loved.”
“I know,” she cups my face, gently cradling it. “You are my guardian angel, my protector, Dean. But you are so much more to me. Dean, you are the first man not wanting to take advantage of me and I think…”
“You think,” she leans closer to press her lips softly to mine. “It’s okay, you can tell me anything, Y/N.”
“I love you,” my angel breathes against my lips. “I know it’s too soon, my guardian angel but I wanted you to know, is all.”
“My angel,” I whisper against her lips, cupping her cheek, “I love you too. My heart, my life belongs to you, sweetheart.”
“Oh, Dean,” she pounces on me, takes me by surprise when she buries her face in my neck to kiss my skin softly. “This is the most beautiful thing I ever heard.”
“You deserve the world, and I’d like to give it to you but, I only got me to offer and my old chevy Impala,” I reply, kissing her temple. “One day, all of the dark days we experienced will be gone.”
I decide right there, at that very moment, to not go after her so-called mother or the other people hurting my girl. I want to spend my life with her and following the dark path again would only part me from my angel.
“I don’t want the world, only you Dean,” she says, smiling softly. “Now, eat your pie, and then let’s go to sleep.”
I wake to my girl’s broken voice. She’s sobbing next to me, crying bitterly and I jolt upward, fearing she regrets our first night together. “Sweetheart, I’m sorry. I haven’t been with a woman for so long. Was I too rough or—”
“Dean, no,” she wraps her arms around my neck, holds me tightly. “This isn’t about you, my love. Last night was wonderful and I felt so good and loved. “
“Y/N, why did you cry if it wasn’t about last night? Why the tears and sadness?” I ask and she lifts her head to meet my eyes. “Baby girl?”
“It’s just, my mother called while you were asleep. No, not my mother, the woman who raised me for money. She said my father refused to pay her for at least a year and now she wants the money back, with interest.”
“What? She wants money after so many years?” I can’t believe that woman wants to ruin my angel’s life once again. “How dare she!”
“She said it’s been over ten years and now she wants fifty thousand bucks. Dean, I don’t have so much money.”
“That’s insane. She won’t get a single buck, sweetheart. My brother, he’s a lawyer. I will call him and make sure that woman will leave you alone,” I say.
“Dean, she said that one of my friends knows where I’m living and that all of them will go after me. They saw me with you, and Mrs. Fraser. That woman, she threatened to let them hurt me, you, and anyone I know if I don’t give her five grand until the end of the week,” Y/N cries into my chest and my dark side takes over once again.
A few hours ago I decided to not go after the monsters of my girl’s past and now, I am forced to go back down the dark path I chose to leave.
“No one is going to hurt you, me or Mrs. Fraser. I promise.”
“Dean, where do you want to go,” Y/N asks innocently, looking up at me as I tighten the grip on my bag. “You will come back, right?”
“I need to make a few arrangements, but you are safe here, at my friend’s place. Bobby is a grumpy old man, but he’ll protect you. And, before you ask, another friend will keep an eye on Mrs. Fraser.”
“O-okay,” she nods, but I can see the tears in her eyes. “Please come back, Dean.”
“Dean, a word,” Bobby says, knowing me too well. “Your girl is safe here, you know that. Let her watch TV and later I’ll make my infamous lasagna.”
“Fine, fine,” I follow Bobby out of the room, hoping my girl won’t ask too many questions. “I’ll be back soon, sweetheart. Just a minute.”
“Dean, I thought you stopped doing this,” Bobby busies himself making coffee, not wanting to think about the consequences of my doing. “Dean.”
“I tried and I wanted to for Y/N,” I huff, hating I must break another promise. “Everything was fine, and the next day her so-called mother calls and wants fifty grand, threatening my girl. Bobby, I need to stop that woman.”
“I know, boy,” he sighs deeply grabbing my face, tears in his eyes. “Dean, I just wish you could stop doing this. Why must you go after all the monsters out there.”
“Family business and all,” I shrug. “Normal people can’t see behind their façade, you know that. Only people like us, facing death once can see the evil behind the friendly faces these monsters wear.”
“I retired years ago boy, you know that, but I still can see the truth. I know you are a good man, just like I know the girl in there can help you heal. How about you let me do this for you. I can call a few friends and take the monster down for you,” Bobby offers.
“You know it must be me setting Y/N free,” I give Bobby a tight smile, knowing he means well. “Dad did one thing right, he trained me well…”
She tugs harshly at the handcuffs I used to restrain her to a chair.Â
“What do you want? Did my daughter send you? That useless bitch never was—” I punch her face hard. Hell, I cross another line. Never before did I hurt a woman, but I can see the monster inside of her, hiding behind e/c eyes. “You hit like a girl. Come on, do your worst, Winchester.”
I stop in my tracks for a moment, wondering how that woman can know my name. I know something is broken in my mind, that I like to imagine the people I go after are monsters but right now it seems like my father was right after all.Â
“Aw, did I scare you, Dean?” she purrs, looking up at me. Her teeth grit, spit runs down her chin and I swear, her eyes are pitch-black when I take a closer look at her. “Come on, didn’t your daddy tell you about the eyes too? Oh yeah, he ended up at an asylum, a branded lunatic.”
“He wasn’t wrong?” I step backward, remembering all the things my father taught me and Sammy over the years. Sam was the one turning his back on my father, not believing the crazy things he said but now, I realize dad was right. “You’re a demon.”
“Ding-dong, Winchester,” she snickers. “You know, Y/N was meant to be your soul mate. We had to ruin her life and kill her mother. Sadly, she ran that night or one of us would’ve ruined her forever.”
“You fucking bitch,” I storm toward the demon, not caring she’s not some crazy bitch. “I will kill you!”
“You can’t kill me, only send me back to hell but I’ll simply possess another bitch and go after your sweet Y/N,” she coos. “Give me hell.”
“No, I can kill you,” I get dad’s favorite knife out, the one he used to call demon knife. I smirk as to my surprise the demon begins to beg for its life. “John Winchester was one crazy bastard, an awful father, and a drill sergeant but—” I ram the knife into the monster’s head right before black smoke can escape her throat.
“He—he was right,” I can feel the woman’s blood on my face and smell it on me, but the worst is, I realize all the things my father told me about the monsters we hunted, the evil hide in the dark are true. “Dad…”
“She’s safe, don’t worry,” Bobby grumbles into the phone. “So, you finally found out the truth, huh? I thought you know about the things that lurk in the dark. Did you believe they are hallucinations?”
“Bobby, not now. The demon said something about Y/N being my soul mate and that they want to kill her. If you know as much about the monster as my dad did, please protect my girl,” I beg. “Please.”
“I will do anything to protect her, Dean. Just come back in one piece,” I can hear my angel call my name, asking about me. “She wants to talk to you.”
“Just a minute,” I listen to my girl’s soft voice and promise to be back soon, hoping it’s not another lie. “Sweetheart, I’ll be back soon. Bobby will take care of you.”
“Please be careful,” she says, making me smile. I will return to her, just not yet. First, I need to do one more thing. “I’ll be waiting for you…”
“It’s been a while, huh?” I step inside my father’s room, swallowing thickly when he stares out of the window, barely recognizing me. “Sir—uh dad. I came here to…I found out it’s true. I killed a demon two days ago. She said they are after my girl; my soul mate and she knew my name.”
“Where is she now?” my father suddenly turns around, smirking as I backpaddle. His posture changes and I can see the glim in his eyes return. “Is she safe? How is Sammy?”
“He’s a lawyer and out of the business. Y/N, she’s safe…for now,” I say, hoping my father can give me advice.Â
“Good. I think it’s time to tell you about your legacy and for you to get to know the whole truth about our family business,” I can only nod when my father gets a bag out from under his bed. “Let’s ride and get your girl. If I’m right, all hell will break loose soon and we will need your brother…”
