I recently finished a book series, āDark Reflectionsā by Kai Meyer. I had read the first book in the series, āThe Water Mirrorā in middle school and did a book report on it. Itās about an orphan girl, Merle, growing up in 1900ās Venice. She becomes an apprentice for the Mirror Maker, Arcimboldo and his housekeeper Eft. I remembered there were mermaids that lived in the canals of the city.
What I didnāt remember was the major plot point that Venice was under siege by Egyptās undead army, and they were the last place on Earth that hadnāt been conquered because of the protection of āThe Flowing Queenā a water deity.
Merle and her crush Serafin explore the city one night and discover Egyptian spies colluding with the Venice City Council. Theyāve captured the essence of the Flowing Queen and Egypt is going to invade once they have confirmation. Serafin intervenes and steals the vial with The Flowing Queen. They escape, but Serafin is captured. Merle gets away, and The Flowing Queen tells her to drink the vial.
The rest of the series is Merle acting under the guidance of the Flowing Queen to get help to fight back against the Empire, and eventually getting to Egypt to hit them at their core. To escape the city, Merle frees Vermithax, a giant flying obsidian lion, from captivity to fly over the Egyptian troops.
Meanwhile, Serafin escapes capture and runs a rebellion in Venice, eventually fleeing the city to reunite with Merle with the help of mermaids and a sphinx.
I drew my favorite characters, Serafin and Vermithax today, despite the fact they barely interact at all until the last bit of the book.
Would I recommend this series? No, not really. It was well written, but besides Serafin and Vermithax, the characters were dislikable. Itās very apocalyptic, and had I known that going in, I probably wouldnāt have read it. The world is fantastic and very interesting, but confusing. Itās a mash of Egyptian mythology, fantasy creatures, and a legally distinct Hell thatās not the Hell of the Bible, but things are still explained with Biblical framework. For example, the big evil is āThe Stone Lightā which is a giant orb of evil in Hell that fell from heaven and possesses people over time. They also call the orb āLuciferā.
Also, Baba Yaga is mentioned in passing.
If youāre still interested after all this, then the next line is a spoiler.
Serafin dies in the very end, despite several other characters having better reasons to sacrifice themselves. This decision made me cry for a straight hour. The most ānormalā, nice, likable characterā¦I suppose thatās why it hit so hard. If it had been one of the others, it wouldnāt have been so tragic.

Im nearing the end of cs2 and thus far serafin hasn't formally addressed with sleeper marko's betrayal in darkside, he just said that he was going to hear the whole story before disappearing to presumably find marko, but then it was never brought up again. For as much shit as serafin gives you throughout the game for the choices you make (aka if you stick by yu-jin serafin is TESTY and basically says yu-jin's your problem) but then sleeper trusts this guy(marko) because one of their most reliable friends(serafin) said hes cool and he almost gets sleeper killed, like serafin where's the outrage? š my man legit hit yu-jin in the head so hard it bled because yu-jin put serafin's crew in danger but sleeper was nearly placed into the arms of the very person theyve been running from the whole game and we get little to no reaction from serafin? Did I just not get to the cutscene yet or something? I know marko had his reasons but given serafin's extremely protective and sometimes aggressive history i thought marko was going to have his entire ASS handed to him
Edit: i ended up learning that there was a small mention regarding serafin's feelings towards marko's actions, so it was nice to see that call back. I do wish we could've seen him on screen talking to marko though, but i cant complain because I loved the game so much š
