So I learned about a fun Sephardic and Persian Jew Passover seder tradition last night, which is going around and hitting each other with green onions during Dayenu. The idea is that you hit each other harder if you think they would have been among the Hebrews who chose to stay in slavery in Egypt rather than follow Moses into freedom and the unknown.
So I propose a new symbol to use when you see a fellow Jew being antisemitic:
Smack 'em with the onion.

The author has a PhD in Medieval History and the History of Food and it shows. Gloriously.
It’s equal parts recipes and the primary sources they’re derived from, from Inquisition records to the Cairo Geniza. Did you know the Cairo Geniza had a hummus recipe? Now you do. Are you curious about Rambam-approved matzoh recipes? Of course you are.

saw on instagram dot com that you wanted to sing in ladino! its not the same, but when i started singing to myself i kurdish, i felt this immense relief in my body as if the connection with my lineage was truly needed
yes! it was one of the languages my grandmother spoke, but she passed away when i was very young so i didn’t get to hear her speak, let alone teach me how. one hand i think it wouldn’t be incredibly hard if i was disciplined abt it beause it is soooo similar to spanish (which i’m semi-conversational in) but on the other hand the resources for learning Ladino are sparse and since it’s an “endangered” language (according to google, somewhere between 60,000 to 300,000 speakers worldwide, most of whom are elderly) and there aren’t a whole lot of speakers in the states. we’ll see though. happy to hear you’re learning to sing in Kurdish, i bet it sounds gorgeous <3
there's also definitely examples of it going the other way, too. I've met Mizrahim who view Ashkenazim as too cosmopolitan or secular, and less authentically Jewish since they didn't stay in the ME. which isn't to say "oh actually it's the Mizrahim that oppress the Ashkenazim" just that the dynamics are more complicated than just "white people bad brown people good"
yep!!!! its basically impossible to apply american or south african or french (the list goes on) racism dynamics on us, because there's really no other group quite like us that has as complex of a history as us.
like you said, thats not to say that there has never been racism ever from ashkenazis to other groups, but its not as black and white (lol) as outsiders view racism.
and they also cannot comprehend the existence of sephardis because wdym these people in the netherlands and morocco are the same
