Week 13 - Sengiggi
We had a very lazy day today napping for a few hours then bobbing around in the pool. We had to walk to the pier to confirm our boat trip to Gili Trawangan the next day and Lee got a haircut in a beauty salon. We also got some laundry done as all of our Rinjani clothes were full of dust. The people here are very cheeky - one laundry guy we walked tried to come up with a charge by weighing our laundry by hand! When he decided Lee's was about 6.5KG and it was 20,000 rupiah per KG, he didn't bother weighing mine (which was clearly less than Lee's) but decided to charge 200,000 for everything. Think he needs to invest in some weighing scales and work on his maths! Needless to say we didn't use him! After finding a person with weighing scales we went to lunch nice restaurant for a much needed Western lunch of pizza and a burger. At 5pm the hotel put on a free cooking class for guests, so we helped make some Indonesian sweets called "klepon" (glutinous rice balls with palm sugar inside and coconut shavings on the outside). We also helped eat them as there we loads! They were OK tasting but nothing special. Maybe they needed more sugar! In the evening we had a celebratory Bintang to toast our Mount Rinjani achievement (as we were too tired to celebrate yesterday) and then went returned that night for another burger and some burritos. I think we are both getting fed up of rice and noodles!
Week 12 - Sengiggi day 1
Our Scoot lift from the homestay to the harbour was due to arrive between 9:45am-10:10am, however by 10:15am it hadn't arrived. As our boat was due to leave at 10:30am, Lee walked to the office to try and find out where the lift was whilst I stood on the side of the road with the bags. Eventually I flagged down a Scoot van at 10:30am and he took me to the harbour where I found Lee. Not very efficient! Our boat left at 10:50am headed for Sengiggi in Lombok. The journey took about 1h45m and was the bumpiest ride ever. The waves weren't that big but the speedboat was flying across the top of them and banging down hard every time we hit a dip. We literally came out of our seats! Half way through the journey Lee spotted a fin in the water and it turned out to be a dolphin! The captain slowed the boat down so everyone could get a look at the pod of dolphins as they swam along. The windows of the speedboat were quite high up, so it was tricky to see out properly, however we were able to catch a glimpse of the dolphins as they swam by. We arrived at Sengiggi pier and started the hunt for a homestay. A local guy told us to go left as there were lots if cheap places that way, but he basically told a big fat lie as the only one we found was a Sheraton - not exactly within our budget! We walked back along the main road and, after declining one grotty little homestay, we came across Family Garden Homestay and booked a night there. We did try to book 3 nights altogether, as we would need a place to stay after completing our 3 day Mount Rinjani trek, but after agreeing a discounted price the man changed his mind and said it would be full price. Cheeky bugger. With our bags in the room we walked up the street and had lunch at a backpacker hotel. We also looked around for another place to stay in a few day's time. We came across the Sendok Hotel which, although slightly over budget, had a pool which we thought might aid our recovery after trekking up a volcano! We booked for two nights on our return then went for dinner. The food was average at best but was cheap so we couldn't complain. We stopped off at a market to pick up some chocolate and nuts for our trek, then went home to bed ready for our 5am pick up the next day.
