The end was approaching. Almost there. A year turned into a few months and then into a few weeks. Kaoru had a calendar in their room, counting down the days, but as they grew closer to the brothers... They stopped. At one point, they stopped feeling pain in their heart. The homesickness slowly disappeared. The exchange student still missed their siblings and friends but they were in no rush to return. Not when they made such wonderful memories with new loved ones. Not when they had... Fallen in love.
" Hey Mammon... " They stepped into his room and closed the door behind them, eyes quickly moving to stare at the floor instead of the other. Could they even force themself to meet his gaze? If they somehow managed it, they only hoped that the tears wouldn't fall. " We should talk. Y'know, I have a few weeks left here and... " Kaoru lifted their head and wiped their eyes, " ...I don't know what to do. I mean, what should we do? About us? "
Their heart hurt, " Fuck... Months ago, this would have never been an issue. Leaving the Devildom but then I got closer to your brothers and... " They moved over to him and held his hands, " ...I fell in love with you. You made it so easy to fall in love with you. Mammon, I love you so much. I want nothing more than to stay here with you and fall even more in love with you every single day but... That's not fair to you. " They sighed and wiped more tears away, " I'm not going to live forever which sucks because I wouldn't complain about a forever with you but... It's not possible so... " Kaoru lowered their head again, " ...maybe we should break up. "
âYo, precious! I was wonderinâ where ya were!â The bright, elated quirk of his voice was brought down the moment he turned to find his dejected human. He had been told to wait here, so he did â because he hoped for something nice, something fun or pleasant. He didnât expect to find them so solemn, the eyes he had quickly come to adore refusing to turn in his direction.
  â We should talk. â
Mammonâs stomach dropped out from underneath his feet. His skin grew hot and cold, the confusing sensation boarding on numbness. There was a cottony dryness to his mouth that made his tongue the texture of sandpaper.
âWâWhy do we gotta do anythinâ about us?â If their heart hurt, than so did his. It was tempting to reach up and rub at his chest where the ache had begun to thrum, but he resisted. Rather, he toyed with one of the rings on his fingers, letting his thumb twist it around and around, until the skin was rubbed raw.
Their hand wrapped around his made him want to hope that this wasnât happening, but it was. They claimed over and over again that they loved him, and that they wanted to stay. Despite knowing from the start that it would only be a year, they didnât want to leave him and his brothers behind.
âYa made it sound like itâs a bad thing that ya fell for me.â He pulled his hand from theirs, but felt his fingers grow cold the moment he did. âWhat about it ainât fair? I knew what I was fallinâ for too, yâknow. It ainât like you beinâ human was a secret! Iâve known ya wonât live forever! Iâve had it drilled intâa my head that ya ainât gonna be around for as long as I am, but I didnât give a shit! I ended up gettinâ attached to ya anyway!â
He ranted and rambled, assuming it wouldnât give them a chance to say what he knew they would say. Because it was inevitable, because he was always bound to lose the things that mattered most to him. He was good enough at getting what he wanted, but keeping it â that was impossible.
He could have gotten upset. He could have demanded they leave him alone while he processed the fact that they would make a heartless suggestion. He could have lost every ounce of progress he had made and shrugged it off, as if it didnât matter to him that a human would want to end their relationship then and there.
But he was the Avatar of Greed. He was stubborn and needy, and he refused to let go when something belonged to him. They had family and friends back in the Human Realm, he knew this. He accepted it. He wanted them to be happy no matter which Realm they happened to be in, even if it meant they couldnât see each other every minute of every day like they had for the last year. But he would be damned if he gave up everything they had.
âBeen here a whole damn year, and ya still donât get it, do ya?â He moved to stand closer, letting both of his hands wrap around the one they had used to take his earlier. He brought the hand up, let it press to his cheek. Behind his shades, his eyes swam. âI donât care if youâre in another Realm, another dimension, another whatever. I donât even care that ya wonât be around forever. Youâre mine, treasure. Mine. Ya hear me? I donât let go once I got my hands on somethinâ I want.â
His head dipped forward, forehead pressed to theirs. And when he continued, his voice sounded the slightest bit pinched and watery.
âYa really didnât think it was just gonna end âcause ya had tâleave, did ya? Itâs gonna hurt like hell that I ainât gonna be able tâsee ya every day, but it ainât gonna make me love ya any less. Nothinâ will ever make me love ya less. . .â
Reluctantly, he pulled away. His hand remained, however, thumb sweeping at their damp eyelids. âIâm only gonna ask ya this one time, then Iâll leave ya alone about it: do ya actually wanna break up with me, or do ya wanna make this work?â
