To participate in prescribed burns, I have to pass a work capacity test once a year. (There are two levels: moderate, which is 2 miles in 30 minutes carrying 25 lbs, and arduous, which is 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying 45 lbs.) It is a safety thing--if you can pass the pack test, you can reliably move quickly when you need to, while bogged down with gear when there's a forest or field on fire next to you. I often listen to music while I practice, but one day I reflected on the story of the tortoise and the hare instead.
