Today I participated in the finale of one of the projects created during the project planning training I assisted with last summer. A group of High School students came and wanted to do an Eco-Marathon. The community loved the idea so much that the administration voted to give them some money to help them. The students had several meetings to plan the details and then decided to make magnets to sell to earn money for future projects. They then went to the 4 different villages that are part of our township and different teams were formed. Each team started on a different road and picked up trash along the roadway. They cooperated with our public utilities organization who came around with tractors to pick up the bags of trash and took it to the dump. Every team met about 3 hours later in our community park to celebrate and take photos at the “finish”. Students said this was important because they want to live in a clean village and it was fun because they got to work with their friends. I am so pleased that less than a year after a training I helped to support with a Peace Corps grant the first project is now complete with huge success. And it was all done by teenagers.
