I just spent an hour on the phone with a friend helping her through her anxiety of the next four years. I didn't patronize her grief or anger, but I did help her through her catastrophizing which was amplifing her fears.
She called into work today which was she needed to do. I made sure she she took a shower, drank some water, and ate a good meal. I encouraged her to take a walk outside even though it is raining.
This person is straight, white, and upper-middle class. Not to downplay her emotions, but if she is this scared and distraught, than think about all the marginalized people around you. Please reach out and take care of each other.
Call, text, maybe go visit your friends. Encourage people to turn off the TV, read a book of fanfic, watch a movie. Give your brain and everyone else's some space to process.
Be kind and gentle with ourselves and those around us. We are still a community and they can't take that away from us.
