I know as well as anyone that in this life, we'll never get a lot of the apologies we deserve. So instead, I started a playlist of things I wish people said or things I'd imagine they'd say. It's called "Dear Will," and I listen to it when my mind goes back to those places.
Most of the healing in our lives is not brought on by others. It's nice when that happens, but we need to learn to be self-sufficient. Learn how to self soothe and be our own best friends, first.
I try my best to believe most people are sorry when they've hurt me, but lack the skills and self confidence to ever reach out or admit wrongdoing. It doesn't excuse the harm they've caused, but it helps humanize them and not turn them into irredeemable pieces of shit.
btw "I'm sorry I..." goes a long way.
breathe.
We don't do compulsive behaviors because we lack willpower. We do them because it's the only way we know how to self soothe. Soothing is an instinctual behavior, not a moral one.
