Shadow of the Fox: Deciphering Character Name Meanings
Or, my weeb brain pestered me with the question,Ā āBut what kanji would these names be spelled with and what would they mean?ā And so I went to find out, armed with a Japanese keyboard, Google Translate, and almost two years of Japanese experience on Duolingo.
Disclaimer: While I know a solid chunk of Japanese, Iām obviously not an expert, especially not on kanji. Iām only working with the kanji suggestions my phone gave me when I typed the names in hiragana.
Yumeko: This oneās easy because canon gave us a meaning of her name. 夢 ādreamā andĀ åĀ āchildā to make 夢åĀ āchild of dreams.ā
Kage Tatsumi: The clan name is easy enoughā影 āshadow.ā With the first name, it gets less obvious. Thereās a lot of variations with the multitude of kanji for dragon (here:Ā tatsu), for example 辰巳 ādragon snakeā orĀ é¾ē¾Ā ādragon beauty.ā My favorite, however, isnāt written with a kanji for dragon; itāsĀ éå®Ā āachievement,ā which fits Tatsumiās earnest, dutiful attitude.
Hino Okame: Hino can be spelled with a variety of kanji, but only one of my suggestions had the one for fire in itāē«éĀ āfire field.ā Okame is a bit more difficult. I got a whole bunch of suggestions containing the kanji for turtle (kame, apparently?) but I doubt samurai parents wouldāve named their kid any of them.Ā äøē®Ā āhill-eyeā seems nearer the mark, especially for an archer (heh, pun) though Iām not sure itās an actual name. Fun fact: SpelledĀ å²”ē®, Okame can also meanĀ āonlooker,ā though I also donāt think it wouldāve been used as a name.
Taiyo Daisuke: Again, the clan name is easyā太é½Ā āsun.ā All options for his given name (that I found) start with 大 āgreat, bigā; a common spelling is 大č¼, butĀ č¼Ā ā-sukeā doesnāt seem to have any meaning beyond being a commonish name ending. I preferĀ å¤§å© withĀ å©Ā āassistanceā to make his name meanĀ āgreat assistance,ā matching his helpful and supportive nature.
Reika: This one I struggled with because there are countless ways to spell the name and so many of them fit.Ā éåĀ āspiritualizationā seems especially fitting for a miko, but since her mother didnāt want her to become one, itās unlikely that sheās actually written that way.Ā éŗčÆĀ ābeautiful flowerā (also comes with a different kanji for flower) is another valid choice, as would beĀ éŗé¦Ā ābeautiful incenseā orĀ å·å¤Ā ācool summer.ā Reika can also be written asĀ é·äø to meanĀ āsubordinate,ā which nobody in their right mind should name their kidāI hope even her mother wasnāt abusive enough for that.
Hakaimono: Another easy one.Ā ē “å£č Ā ādestroyer.āĀ āHakaimono the Destroyerā literally translates toĀ āDestroyer the Destroyer,ā which sounds rather less badass and a lot more repetitive.
Mura Suki: Easy again. Mura is almost certainly written asĀ ęĀ āvillageā; Suki is probably spelled 儽ćĀ ālike.ā Thereās also a kanji forĀ āgapā that reads as suki, but I believe theĀ ālikeā meaning to be more likely, tying in with how much of her storyline is centered on her crush on Daisuke.
Seigetsu: The most plausible spelling I found isĀ éęĀ āblue moon,ā which can be read as ao tsuki (says Google Translate) or, apparently, Seigetsu. In any case the getsu part of his name is almost definitely written with the kanji for moon, consideringā¦wellā¦who he is.
okay but deidara is the most relatable akatsuki because he cannot take criticism

š The new short story has me in actual real tears y'all. Just hearing about it in game made me sad; reading about it in detail is sooooo much worse. Poor Cid ;.; I want so badly for us to go back in time in that other timeline, just to tell him he did a good job ;ā; And poor Wedge ;.;
But all the friends we made helping them out gave me happy tears too. The sky pirates finally get some spotlight, tsundere Seiryu pitches in, equally tsundere Hraesvelgr helps, and not for the common good. For us, specifically.
Everyone, Ironworks and all our other friends, deserve a giant hug!!! All the hugs.
Seigetsu normally: Ha ha, Iām a bad ass swordsmen. Iāll cut you to pieces and keep your weapons for myself.
Seigetsu when the Hokage are revived: Orochimaru p l e a s e put them back.Ā
Yumeko: You murdered three people!
Seigetsu: It all just sort of snowballed.
