Following the small yellow flowers of Fibigia clypeata (Roman shields) in the summer there is a winter display of oval grey-white seedpods like shields that last all winter. This short lived perennial is hardy and grows well in a free draining soil in full sun.

It’s easy to mistake a Lindley’s false silverpuff (Uropappus lindley) for a common dandelion: they both produce a single yellow flower, both have milky sap, and both have fluffy seed heads that disperse in the wind.
But the silverpuff has a distinctive silvery, five-pointed wings (the pappus, which act as parachutes for the attached seeds). They’re native to California and support birds, rodents, butterflies, and bees.
