The idea I had with it was for Batman to have studied Phantom's OG suit (plus the Fentonworks research he brought along) and developed a material-variant that integrated with his ecto-signature.

Partially so that it would "stick" to Danny's ghost-form and transform with him, partially so that it would react to and not interfere with his powers, and partially so that the ecto-dampening component of the built-in stealth-tech would mask his signature and prevent tracking when activated.

I also did a rough concept sketch of the design a few years back.

Chapter 16 was one of those ones that went through a lot of drafts. The early versions had much longer sections about the functionality, performance requirements and design process that Batman and Robin went through in making the new suit, and how Danny had to hang out for several days in Phantom form just wearing it until synced to him properly.

But, as I went back through, a lot of that detail ended trimmed down to keep the opening from taking a needlessly technical exposition-dump at the expense of the pacing, characters and information that was actually important to the story.

In the final cut I think it ended up just being lightly alluded to in this line:

Even with non-stop wear it could take weeks before a uniform felt truly comfortable.

The general arrived at Alec Hardy’s house, currently without Sarah, which they were a tad miffed about. Of course, her telling them that her friend had gotten mixed up with a serial killer was a pretty good reason to want some alone time to process, but they were literally picking up Alec so they could go help that same friend. It was clearly a ploy to get them and Alec alone... a second chance at a first meeting, since their first impression had been so fucking shitty, dammit Beelzebub...

They knocked on the door, trying their damn best not to pace, and hurriedly pushing their hair into place. Fuck. Fuuuuck. Okay, stay calm. How intimidating can this be? They had put on their best (only) outfit for this and had smoothed it to look as nice as possible. The rune pendant felt heavy in their pocket as they waited for him to answer the door.

Sybill and Henry had an agreement concerning their relationship and it was one she was perfectly content with. She knew Henry loved her and she loved him. They both had loads of love to give to the world so why not share it with others? 

Sybill met Nigel when he had a hand on Henry’s leg. His demeanor in that entire exchange was lovely. He did seem a gentle person, but Sybill wanted to get to know him. She wanted to talk to him one-on-one. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to discuss all that had happened with Henry, Han, Nigel and herself but she wouldn’t dismiss it. Primarily, she wanted to know Nigel. If he was important to Henry, Sybill had to get to know him, that’s all there was to it. 

While she’d been reluctant to go to the ceilidh, it would give she and Nigel the chance to talk. That’s all she really wanted. He had a friendly face and knew what she was up against. He seemed the right person to turn to.

Somehow she’d managed to find a table and sat, sipping her water through a straw, waiting for him to find her. Her heart was pounding. She knew why she was nervous. She didn’t want anyone to question why on earth Henry would choose her. She knew their relationship and who they were, but to the outside world she knew they didn’t make sense. What if Nigel believed that?

It was with those thoughts that she looked up and saw him walking toward the table. She inhaled sharply, forced a smile and waved him over. “Hi Nigel,” she said softly. “I’m surprised you found me in this mess of people.”

((Aaaaand I am also a JeanPiku shipper and can I just say that I LOVE and appreciate Ms. Pieck here??? She's my second favorite character here! (first is Mikasa of course! 🤭) I am blown away by the fortitude that she showed. She didn't blame or shy away from the truth. She was gracious to Mikasa and mend fences with her eventho I imagine most would never be able to do that and I think that takes so much fortitude. Just like Mikasa, I hope JeanPiku to be happy and in love eventually.))

i’m so glad you enjoy it so much! i truly do love mikasa in that fic, too. there’s a palpable sweetness to her, but she has a strong sense of self. as much as she loves eren, she won’t allow him to play with her emotions. she yearns to be with him, but only on terms that feel honest for her, which his proposal obviously wasn’t.

i’m happy you liked pieck and jean’s story too. admittedly, i’m not much of a jeanpiku. i prefer jeankasa and jikupiku more, but i think jeanpiku worked the best in the context of this story. and i do see them falling in love in the future as they continue to settle into their marriage. i don’t see them being especially passionate, but i do see them happy and content with each other. a marriage of true minds <3
