Photos from yesterday’s impulse boat ride on the Elkhorn Slough Safari. It was an amazing hour and a half from the Moss Landing Harbor into the mudflat and eelgrass lined slough. The otters were out in abundance - 75 of them! - and a full 25 were pups. We saw the babies resting on their mother’s chests or bobbing in the water calling out for food. We watched one munch down on a large Dungeness crab and learned that gulls will haze otters for food just like they do human picnickers. There were 35 different bird species our captain and naturalist counted, including white pelicans. And the hundred of sea lions put on a good show, demonstrating how they can sink docks and make a huge racket.
