You flopped over on your stomach, lifting yourself up on your hands and feet and then crawled. Right now you really couldn't care less about how you looked like to others. The air was less thick down here so you stayed low, following that voice. Sometimes you believed that you spotted shadows and silhouttes around you. They were running away, sprinted past you. Sometimes you heard a horrified scream piercing the air before it went silent. Sometimes you saw the silhouttes falling down and disappearing from sight. They were running away from the direction you were quietly crawling at.

What was there?

The heat hit you long before the bright and burning light did. The remains of a cottage became visible through the thick smoke, the stone structure destroyed by a force you still couldn't comprehend. Half-buried under the rubbles you finally spotted the source of the voice. A young woman you briefly recalled sold her eggs on the morning market every weekend. Her legs were buried beneath the stones and she desperately tried to lift it off.

"Wai-"

Your voice croaked almost as soon as you tried to use it, your throat burning with the strain of talking through all the smoke you had already inhaled. A coughing fit was your punishment, your throat burning as you were overcome by it. Still, the woman still noticed you. Her head snapped around and she could just about make you out through the smoke. Her eyes were as wide and fearful as yours were, her facial expression crumbling into one of despair.

"Please help me. Please...please..."

Snot and tears stained her face as pleading sobs tumbled from her lips. The flames were licking away on what had once been her rooftop, getting closer to her. Whatever had brought this disaster onto the village was still lurking around in the smoke somewhere. She would die if she wouldn't get away soon.

"I'll help... It's alright..." you wheezed out, biting down on your lips to stiffle any other coughs from punching their way out. You grabbed the stones that had collapsed whilst she had tried to escape and now had her stuck and then started to pull. Your muscles were pulled taut like a bowstring, your fingers digging into the rough and jagged material. In no time you felt your muscles screaming in protest, could feel your nails scratching and breaking and the sharp sting as the blood started to seep into your nailbed.

The young woman assisted you, pushing it away from her as you pulled it from above her in a desperate attempt to lift it slightly. For a few moments that lasted too long, the structure didn't budge. Veins started to pop up on your neck, tension grabbing hold of every inch of your body. It felt like your eyes were about to pop out due to the exertion. Your teeth were gnashed together so tightly in your clenched jaw that it felt like they were about to chip off. Hot sweat gathered on your forehead, back and under your armpits. Whether that was due to the fire so close or due to the physical exertion didn't matter.

Eventually though the thing finally moved. Agonisingly slow that had your muscles crying and begging but it finally budged, even if only for a bit. You leaned your back back, spine threatening to snap as you tried to use your full body weight to lift it up further. The young woman spoke something. You couldn't hear her. Your ears were ringing with the sound of blood rushing through your body and your heart thudding violently against your ribcage.

The gap was small but somehow she managed to wriggle herself out slowly. Internally you were screaming for her to hurry up. Your arms were trembling and it felt like they would shatter any moment. The stone was painted in the blood seeping from your fingers which dug into the coarse surface, stinging like tiny needles that kept on being plunched into the wounds. The moment her feet were out from beneath the rubble your body let go before your brain even caught up. The impact of the stone hitting the now empty spot beneath it created a far too loud crashing sound that even you could hear above your racing heart that felt lie it was about to implode.

The woman next to you was still sobbing, most likely still in too much shock from what had just happened. The true fear would hit later. Your blurry vision trailed down to her legs. They looked better than what you had initially feared. They were still intact though you didn't know if a bone had been crushed.

"Can-can you still crawl?" you questioned breathlessly, leaning back on your hands as you looked at her. Teary eyes glanced at you before she nodded. A barely relieved grunt spilled from your lips before you turned back on all four. Your arms gave out almost immediately, still shaking from having lifted up the rock. Still, there was no time. Now that you could slowly focus on the sounds around you again which weren't blended out by your own heartbeat you slowly became aware that it had gotten unnervingly quiet.

"Then let's go. We have to hurry o-"

"There you are! I found you~"

A new voice cut through the thick silence of the smoke. Cheerful and sweet. Too sweet. You froze. So did the woman next to you. Your head immediately twisted around, trying to locate where exactly the owner of this voice was. You couldn't see anything though. The voice had sounded so close yet stil you couldn't see a person near.

Your eyes flickered quickly over to the woman next to you. The look of quiet horror mirrored your own. Your head subtly jerked forward, silently telling her to get away from here as quickly as possible. She understood your silent demand and turned her body around so that she too was on her hands and knees. Both of you quietly but quickly crawled your way through the smoke. Your eyes constantly darted back and forth and up and down, trying to spot any figure following the both of you. For a while you couldn't hear or see anything though which had you wondering if perhaps you had just gone insane and had hallucinated together with the other woman something.

"And where do you think you're going, hmm? You should come crawling to me."

Warm breath tickled the shell of your ear and you immediately jerked away, bumping right into the other woman. Both of you stumbled back. Now you could see someone else. Now there was the owner of that voice from earlier, leaning down only a few feet away from you with a tilted head. Light purple hair spilled over her shoulders and empty eyes stared at you. A smile adorned her face but it didn't look very friendly. It terrified you if at all.

"I'm sorry for only picking you up now. But all those screams got on my nerves so I took care of that problem quickly before searching for you. They all tasted mediocre at best though. Be good now and let's get out of this place."

You could barely follow. You understood each word clearly but couldn't believe them. Was she saying that she had done all of this? By herself? That wasn't possible. You had seen whatever that black thing had been that had attacked your village. That had been no human. Unless...

"Oh dear. Are you dazzled by my beauty or just stupid of hearing? I told you to crawl over to me."

She took one step closer to you. You didn't crawl away. Terror had you pinned down, your breath hitching when that woman leaned further down so that her face was too close to yours.

That's when she seemed to truly look at you for the first time. First surprise crossed her features. Then confusion. Then came the rage.

“…Why do you cry?! Who made you cry?!”

Crying? Dirty hands wiped right under your eyes, smudging blood, ashes and mud right on your cheeks. There was a wet shimmer on the tip of your fingers which told you that you had indeed started to cry. You didn't even know when that had happened. Your eyes stung so much after all.

“Tell me their fucking names so I can rip their heads off for making my darling cry!”

What were you supposed to tell her. There were no names. it was her fault that you were crying. However, you didn't dare to speak that up. You were terrified of her reaction. You didn't even know her name but you had a feeling that she wouldn't take it well.

That's when twitching and hollow eyes zoomed in on the woman behind her.

"Who is that?"

The hair on your neck stood up. Alarm bells went off inside your head. Yet you still couldn't move. Your limbs felt like they had been turned to stone.

"Is it her fault that you're crying?"

The woman behind you started sobbing louder, shrinking under the gaze of a snake woman. You willed yourself to shake your head weakly as otherwise your body refused to move and the words refused to leave your throat. As if one wrong sound or twitch of your fingers would trigger the purple-haired being in front of you.

However, the other woman behind you didn't stay still as you did as her flight instinct took over. You felt how she moved behind you, standing up on her feet and tried to run away. Then you saw how the eyebrows of her twitched and a sneer made its way on her face. She flicked her wrist once. Something black shot out from the ground. It swung past you before you heard a wet and creaking sound. Not even a scream. Something warm hit the back of your neck, dripping down into your clothes. You didn't turn around. You didn't have the courage to do so.
