This is literally one of the reasons why I have her be the Water Wife. It makes me so fucking happy to think about. As that's exactly it and I just love it so much. Water, after everything you've been through, should be terrifying but not completely so because of her. Certain types of water are terrifying and the others are comforting. You already said it but ooooghghh Ima be incoherent.

The "Joy like that of a sailor." The sailor is covered in brine and probably smells of rotten seaweed and he's cold but he can BREATHE again. He can be CLEANED.He can get better, he's kissing the sweet earth of his homeland (Penelope). It's a start.

oh jesus. i think it would all depend on context. like, is there an option to sacrifice herself so that both loved ones could live? because if that was the case then she would jump on that in a heart beat. alternatively, is it the love of her life and their child? because she would save their child if she had no other option (if she was to save the love of her life and not their child then it would be inevitable that everything changes between them. like. her partner would never forgive her for letting their child die, and then she would be losing two loved ones instead of the one.) if it’s between the love of her life and a best friend or other family member? she would save the love of her life. and there would be no questioning it, either. whoever zel falls for has her completely.

particularly in zelda’s original universe with her wife, marielle (and their daughter, evie). zelda knows that she couldn’t live without marielle and that there would be no point in “carrying on” without her. it’s very selfish, considering the fact that she has a daughter, but without the “other half” of her she wouldn’t feel like she’s capable of taking care of evie. not for a long time, anyway. she certainly wouldn’t be the same person that she used to be. she would have no idea how to go on without marielle, not after ten plus years of being together. not after everything they have already gone through as a couple. and i’ll reiterate, it is very selfish. she knows it, too, and is ashamed of it, but can’t bring herself to do anything about it. if she had no other family or friends around her who could help take care of evie, then of course she would take care of her, protect her, love her, but she would be on auto pilot the entire time she’s doing it. fun times would be rare. evie would end up being the one to take care of her mom. because zelda would just... deteriorate

not that she wouldn’t instinctively put her entire life on the line to protect evie if it came to it. and there would be glimmers of the old zelda -- later on... but they would be so rare. suppose that means there’s hope, at least. maybe.
