Eastern Screech Owl

Back in the early 1990s, while trying to find my place in this world, I was a part-time warden for a small preserve in New Hamburg, New York. Reece Sanctuary, situated along the Hudson River, was under the care of Putnam Highlands Audubon chapter of which I belonged.

One the first things I did in my position was to build a little box for screech owls—and I didn't have to wait long to get an occupant. Being a photographer, I had a Nikon F3 with a remote set up and so was able to get this shot of the little guy.

...I totally forgot to post the final of my screech owl! I had an encounter with a screech in my back yard a little while ago - she was sitting on a plant pot at knee height - and in the total darkness I nearly blundered into her. I don't know who was more surprised. She definitely made this face at me before flying off.

One of my favourite pieces, taken from a ring I designed for my jewellery school graduate exhibition. It works so well as a pendant, but I definitely need to make some more of these rings too.

Both revered and feared, the goddess Lilith has long been associated with the dark feminine as well as symbols such as the owl, serpent, tree, and dark moon. Translations of her name are varied and range from ‘screech owl’, ‘laylah’ which is 'darkness’ or 'night’ in Hebrew, to 'lilitu’ which is said to be the Babylonian word for ‘evil night-spirit.’
