Scratchwood, Edgware, London; 21.8.2016

This tree stands in a triangular patch of ancient woodland that's been here since the last ice age. It's in a tiny wedge of land at the London end of two of Britain's most important roads - the A1 (the Great North Road that once carried coaches from the City to Scotland) and the M1 (Britain's first multi-lane motorway, built in the 1950s). Standing here, listening to the roar of traffic, at the junction of these two huge routes as they converge on London, is a kind of disorienting anthropocene rush.
