Short Story- Rachel - Jungle Nature Preserve 1/1 Rachel waved her student ID card to gain free admission to a small nature preserve not far from where she lived. The skeptical human attendant looked it over extra closely before finally gesturing her to enter. Rachel wasn't surprised, there were only a handful of elves attending her school. The environment of this microclimate was different from the rest of Al'via. Lush, moist, humid, held in place by a long-term programmed magic spell. Hopefully managed better than the environmental transformation spell that spiraled out of control and sank the surface continents ages ago, she thought. She moved deeper into the small jungle. Ahead of her was what appeared to be an ancient temple, but scientists said these were no more than 100 years old. This is one thing she didn't understand. Archaic structures just appeared one day all over Al'via and nobody seemed to care where they came from and what they were for? The calls of exotic birds pierced the air as she approached the entrance. Small waterfalls trickled down aged stone steps into clear pools full of tiny fish. She had to place entirely to herself, like it was her own private world. She imagined herself as being the first elf to discover this ancient temple, a brave explorer mapping the wilderness. Inside the temple was an intricately carved stone altar lit by a solitary lantern. Reaching out a hand, she lightly touched the cool surface. And for an instant she was in another place, outside a temple lit by neon pink and purple lights. Odd synthetic music was playing, alien and unfamiliar. Stumbling backwards, she jerked her hand away. Everything instantly returned to normal. Hands shaking, she touched the altar again. Nothing. And again. Still nothing. She shook her head. The vision the magical deer showed her. Now this. I haven't posted art projects in a while, I plan on it at some point when I'm not job hunting but I wanted to share this moment. I've been working on my scifi novel for years, doing world building, research, and took classes to improve my writing. I haven't worked on the novel in a long time cause life got in the way, I had random chunks going nowhere, and the middle was difficult to pass. Something just snapped in me and I've been in a writing frenzy for the last week or so. I'm on page 138, full steam ahead, and I'm still in shock that after such a long writers block I found out I was capable of doing so much in little time. Ravage, my novel, deals with a lot of issues I'm passionate about: genetic engineering, the morality of it, global warming, the future and the relationship between animals, nature and people. I've been angry at the state of the world and enraged at injustices along with finding another job, and I'm so thankful I managed to channel that rage into something positive.
