"Regrets collect like old friends, and all of the ghouls come out to play. Every demon wants his pound of flesh,” Zevran muses, flipping through a the collection of paper before him. It was little more than a published collection of stories, gathered from a variety of sources. Many of them outright contradicted each other, each one claiming to know the Black Fox personally. Zevran found those especially fascinating, though he isn’t sure Remi feels the same. “It is always darkest before the dawn, as they say.”
They make an odd pair, the two of them. Not quite friends, not really enemies, and there’s something like regret in Remi’s eyes when he looks at Zevran, which Zevran understands, but can’t bring himself to address.
It isn’t Remi’s fault his mother had died. It isn’t even his own, which he knows, objectively, but refuses to acknowledge otherwise. It isn’t Remi’s fault the whorehouse couldn’t afford to keep him, nor was it Remi’s fault that the Crows had happened to be there at the slave market that day and had found him a viable subject. These are the things they do not talk about.
He likes to keep his issues drawn to himself; both of them do.
So, here they stand, in the libraries of Skyhold, a book in Zevran’s callused hands. It had been a manner of joking on Zevran’s part, to question the truth of the stories, but here they are, confronting the past neither of them share but find in common regardless.
“It’s hard to dance with a devil on your back, no?”
