Detention? More Like Rocktention – A Re-Assessment of School of Rock (2003)
Dewey Finn (Jack Black, in full caffeinated gremlin mode) impersonates a substitute teacher, weaponizes power chords, and accidentally invents the greatest extra-credit project in cinematic history. Richard Linklater lets the amps hum, while writer Mike White lobs punch-lines like chalk erasers at the blackboard. The result? A PG-13 kiddie riot that somehow feels like Wayne’s World got tenure.
Plot Vibes
Imagine Dead Poets Society if Mr. Keating had a Gibson SG, a hangover, and zero lesson plans. Dewey secretly drills the class in AC/DC riffs instead of algebra, all en route to the Battle of the Bands. Life lessons delivered through distortion pedals? Totally on brand for early-2000s optimism.
Why It Rocks
Jack Black = Human Power Chord. Every eyebrow wag and belly flop onto a desk sells the fantasy that rock-and-roll is both sacred rite and recess.
Kid Ensemble Wins the Talent Show. Each student is sketched in broad strokes yet lands a solo – from shy Tomika’s mic-drop moment to fret-board prodigy Zack.
Soundtrack That Slaps. When Stevie Nicks and The Who form your study playlist, you’ve already aced the final.
Where It Flunks
Plot logistics are looser than Dewey’s necktie: Any real-world school would’ve phoned the cops before the first face-melting solo. But realism isn’t the homework assignment here – vibe is.
Final Grade
📝 A- for Audacious Amplified Academia – Docked a smidge for educational malpractice, but rewarded for making every viewer want to air-guitar their attendance sheet. Two decades later, its message still shouts: find your groove, then crank it to eleven (even if the principal is listening).
🎸 🤘 🏫
@ZiggyStardust42: “Just reenacted the Battle of the Bands with my cat as bassist—got detention from the neighbors. Worth it.”
@PrincipalBuzzkill: “As an actual school administrator, I object… but also I’ve secretly started a faculty jam night.”
@LilTambourineTim: “I was six when this dropped; now I teach music because Dewey said it was okay to skip fractions for funk.”
