Girls' night out - part 3
“Who the hell could it be that knocks so hard?”
Sally had shivered and jerked backwards hearing the knocking, but now she was back on her feet and looking at Lucy, who had giggled seeing her reaction. “Whoever it is, it looks like they're kinda mad” she said, getting out of the room. “Come on.” Sally stared at her, eyes wide. “Mad??” She repeated. She scratched the back of her head. “Oh, no… what if it's dad's former classmate to whom he had tied a tail to his trousers, making him go ridiculous for an entire day?”
Lucy laughed even harder. “My, Sally, I know siblings are alike, but I didn't think you and Charles were SO alike!” She exclaimed, leaning on the doorframe with one hand.
“Plus, I know someone strong enough to knock like this at… Charles’ door.” Ignoring the younger girl’s complaints, she simply turned the doorknob. Even if it was Patty, it's not like she was going to–
“I JUST GOT INTO A FRICKIN' FIGHT FOR YOU!!”
She jerked her chest backwards as Patty, her face so red that her numerous freckles were almost invisible, and her hair messy as a lion’s mane, almost slammed herself into her. She could have sworn that her teeth had turned into a lion’s, too. She felt all the blood drain away from her cheeks, and remained there, staring at the wild girl with wide eyes.
Before realisation came crashing into Patty, Marcie had already performed miraculous rescue by pulling her aside, and now she stood confused on the doorstep, Lucy still trembling, Marcie shaking her head. “She–”
”I- I'm so sorry Lucille, I had no idea you were in here…” she muttered, fiddling her fingers. “...I didn't know I was gonna find you in here…”
Sally had appeared behind Lucy, head tilted to the side, an eyebrow raised. “Whatever the–”
“I thought I was gonna find Chuck” Patty explained. “You know, he's usually home at this time.” her voice was clearly sinking. Sally shook her friend's shoulders, and the traumatised girl blinked a few times before realising what was going on.
“Sooooo… what happened? Why did you wanna shout at my brother?” Sally smirked. “Not that you'd be wrong anyways. Did he dump you or something?” Patty’s eyes went to the ground, and Sally immediately reached her hand out to pull her chin up. “Hey- I was just kidding. He can't even be with a girl, much less dump her. What happened?” She repeated. When Patty opened her mouth, she added, “Let's go to my room.”
Sally plopped on her bed, and Lucy sat at its foot, her head on the soft mattress. Marcie got a chair and crossed her legs. The whole room was staring at Patty, who was opposite to them, leaning on the pink wall. It was such an interesting contrast, the wall all pink, and Patty with messy hair, crusts on her hands and bandages all over her legs.
“Soo… do you know that thing the teacher makes you do where you pick a person and describe them for the others to guess?’
“Yuck,” said Sally at the same time. “I hate it. I just wrote down a description of my friends and learned it by heart for that junk.”
Patty nodded and breathed in before carrying on. “We had to do that in class today. So I told Marcie I was gonna do Chuck, cause we always do each other all the time. And.. this Maya girl in my class, she whispers to her friend, and goes, "Ugh, can't believe she’s gonna describe that useless fat idiot, everybody knows him anyways,” the listening girls chuckled as she mockingly mimicked a high-pitched girl voice. “So I stood up, pushed her and asked her to repeat what she'd just said. She just… stared at me, so I started punching her, carefully avoiding the nose.”
“That's my girl!” Lucy stood up with a shriek, fist raised. “You never, ever touch the nose. It could make your whole life worse. I once did with my brother. I'm still grounded to this day and he gets to pick the TV program first on Saturdays.” She rolled her eyes and sat back on the rug.
“You're a legend, Patty.”
Patty felt blood rush to her face. Lucille had never, never referred to her with her name only and had never complimented her this way. She felt a surge of pride raise in her chest and rubbed the back of her head, smiling sheepishly. “Thanks, Lucille… Lucy” she said softly. “But I still haven't gotten to the part where I pull her hair.”
This time, it was both Lucy and Sally who started laughing, and Marcie giggled along, her hand covering her mouth. “And Marcie had to drag me away! I don't think I've ever seen an adult so angry in my entire life.”
“So they sent you to the office?”
“They indeed sent me to the office” Patty responded. “But I was sooo mad – crying, sniffling and breathing super hard – I don't remember a single word. I just remember Marcie speaking in my place” she glanced at her friend. “Pretty sure you told loads of lies.”
Marcie shrugged. “Gee. Just told her that Maya’d insulted your dad.”
The girls burst out laughing, Lucy patting the floor in front of her and Sally with her face in her hands. “Sounds fair to me!” she exclaimed.
“So…” Lucy started after the laughter died down. “You like Charles?”
“Oh.” Patty had a start. The blood who was starting to wash away from her face got back up all in once. “Well…” she hadn't planned on saying that. “He's my friend-”
“Mh-mh” Sally nodded exaggeratedly, hands crossed under her chin. “I know, right?”
“Awww, come on” her back against the wall, Patty sat down, her fingertips wet with sweat. “Kinda.”
“That's more like it” Sally nodded approvingly, winking in her direction. Lucy was gonna ask something else, but Marcie stepped in and saved the day. “What about you two? You didn't look very happy when we came in, Lucy. I mean, before sir tried to eat you.”
Lucy laughed, and Patty rolled her eyes. “Don't call me that.”
“Well I got trouble with the school, too,” answered Sally, since the question was totally directed towards her. “Mrs. Prezpey caught me staring outta the window during a test.” Patty gritted her teeth. “Ouch. When’d you get smart enough to afford that, huh?” Sally nudged her jokingly. “I always was. Oh- and Lucy was stood up by Schroedie.” “What the hell!” Lucy burst out laughing once again. “It's like- the dumbest name I've ever heard in my entire life!”
“Girls, we got serious stress issues” Sally stated, laying back in bed. “We need a break from the entire universe.”
“Yeah! A girls’ night out!” Lucy sprang up at once. “Without boys!”
"Without boys!” Said Patty at the same time. She looked at Lucy and smiled. She felt like she was getting to know her just now. “That’d be epic.”
“But I don't think our parents will agree to let us out at night” remarked Marcie.
“Yeahh” Sally scoffed. “Forgot we're not in a TV series.”
“So what? Let's have a DAY out!” Patty had not lost hope and was now sitting at the edge of Sally’s bed, her legs a few inches from Lucy, who looked eagerly at her. “Or a night IN” she laughed.
“How about we have both?” suggested Sally. “We can go out, maybe have a picnic, and then in the evening we gather here in my room and play board games or whatever!”
“Really?” Said Patty. “I don't know. There's boys outside. A whoopin' lot of ‘em.”
“Oh, oh, we can go shopping!” Sally clapped her hands like a seal. “I’ve never seen a boy in a clothing store before. They always let their mothers shop clothes for them. This is why Charlie has like 10 yellow shirts with a black zigzag on them.”
“Charles changes his clothes??” Lucy exclaimed sarcastically, looking at Sally. “Unbelievable! But what if we… went to a restaurant?”
“Lucy… we’re not Schroeder!” The others said simultaneously. “I'm sorry, we’ll never be him.” Sally added, rubbing Lucy’s shoulder with a mocking smile which made her roll her eyes, a thick red line on her face. “Yeahh… whatever, I was joking, alright? We can go to the park or something.”
“But there's boys at the park!” Sally pouted.
Then Marcie stood up. “But what if we went wherever we want without caring about boys? It's not like they own the world or something. We won't bother thinking about them. We will have a good time, all by ourselves, and they won't exist to us.”
Her words hung in the air, that seemed to get heavier carrying them around, as they worked their magic in the girls' heads. Needless to say Patty stood up first. ‘Marcie… you… are… a… GENIUS!” as the last word was said, she launched herself into her friend, hugging her tightly, and soon felt the warm bodies of the others pressing against theirs.
“It's the smartest thing I've heard today!”
“How are you even the same age as my brother?”
“So, ladies, we got a plan,” said Patty, her arms still around a confused and blushing Marcie’s shoulder. “Tomorrow, whatever we want!”
“Oh hell yeah!” Lucy had to prevent herself from shouting it. “That's the greatest idea!”
“So, tomorrow at… shall we say, ten?” suggested Sally.
“At ten” confirmed Lucy. “Girl power!” She balled her hand into a fist toward Patty, who smiled and bumped it with her own. “Girl power!” Sally jumped out of the bed and joined with her own battle cry. “Girrrrl power!” Marcie reached out as well. “Girls with power!”
Patty waved her hand at Sally and Lucy, and opened the door. She sprang past a confused Charlie Brown, Marcie at her heels. “Oh, hey Charles! I got into a fight for you at school.” She briefly kissed him on the cheek and hopped on her bike, Marcie sitting behind her.
As they got further and further, they were followed by Charlie's gaze.
“I will never understand girls” he sighed.
“Maybe that's how it's meant to be.”
