Built under the rule of Ludwig II, the grand palace complexes in Bavaria were among 26 new sites granted world heritage status

Ludwig II (Ludwig Otto Friedrich Wilhelm; 25 August 1845 – 13 June 1886), also called the Swan King or the Fairy Tale King (der Märchenkönig), was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886.

He also held the titles of Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, Duke of Franconia, and Duke in Swabia.

This time Schachen :D

Yesterday I hiked up to the Schachenhaus. I started in Elmau, Bavaria. The hike is 900m altitude and it took me around 3 hours up.

The Mountain range is impressive.

The cows are rather bored and dozing in the sun. 

The King's House on Schachen was built between 1869-1872 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It is often described as a hunting lodge, though Ludwig never used it for this purpose, instead utilizing it for birthday and anniversary celebrations. On the inside, the first floor looks like a mountain cabin with wooden panels and simple wooden furniture. It looks quite humble for a king. But on the second floor, you feel like in an oriental palace! The big room is equipped with stained-glass windows and lots of oriental ornament, water pipes and a fountain in the middle. (The photos from the interior are from the official website. I would have taken nicer ones with my iPhone but well...)

Adjacent to the little castle is an alpine garden that cultivates over 1,000 plant species from the Alps to the Himalayas. I like botanical gardens. They are so peaceful and it is so impressive to see all the different shapes and colors nature came up with.

And of course, there was this great view.
