Wanda wondered how appropriate it was for her to tell her son that she hated herself. Sometimes it was evident and Billy had seen it first hand. He had seen the way she took the slurs and hatred thrown in her direction because she believed she deserved it.

And she did.

Her past indiscretions weren’t the only reason she hated herself. The fact that she had lost her sons and then her mind was a regret but she regretted nothing more than that she wasn’t there for her sons, for either of them. 

"It’s complicated." She answered. It was the simple answer and probably one Billy wouldn’t accept. 

"All I ever wanted in my life was a family. I wanted children and a husband who loved me. I had both and I lost both. It doesn’t excuse what I did.” 

Wanda felt like she had to reiterate that point. No matter what went wrong in life, Wanda had reacted in the worst possible way.

1. Billy takes all the things Tommy dreams of having for granted. A kind, loving family, having someone love him as much as Teddy does, having people stand up for him when they want to lock him up.
