A pirate like Alfred shouldn’t have to experience this sort of pain, well, he was no longer in pain now. No one saw it coming when a sword was driven through his heart, his body recoiling in pain with blue eyes wide in shock. Alice missed the sight of his eyes, they reminded her of the ocean, always moving and never staying in one spot for long. The day they closed was the day his pain went along with it. 

They said no one would remember a pirate like him, they’d never care for someone who got drunk off rum and stole ships. How she found that statement to be terribly wrong, Alfred was more than that. He had a laugh that could make anyone smile along with him. How he’d make the silliest face just to get a reaction out of the kids. She could keep going, never would she allow anyone to call him a no good pirate who was going to rot at the bottom of the sea. 

Alice had been there, seen the sword pulled back from his chest with blood spilling off the blade. Seen the woman who held the sword push back her silver hair and blink away tears gathered in the corner of her eyes. His lover killed him on that rainy day, in a fit of uncontrolled rage and emotions. There was pain in her soul, the man she loved had a disease spreading through his body. 

The silver hair woman didn’t want him to be in it any longer, Alfred didn’t want to deal with suffering anymore. Though, he smiled, kept on smiling no matter how each day he was dying little by little. Alice didn’t know the other women well enough, all she saw was Alfred managing to make her smile. It was rare sight, and one he craved. 

A scream tore through the air after the woman realized what she’d done, breaking onto her knees and sobbing into her hands. Alice couldn’t move her feet, in disbelief of what happened as she watched from afar. Her dear friend died. 

The days after his funeral, Alice couldn’t hear his laughter anymore. She couldn’t imagine it, nor did his smile ever reappear in her mind. It was a blank space with his name above it. The kids asked “Where’s Uncle Alfred?” No, no, Alice could never answer that. Roderich would have to tell the children to run off and play. With him attempting to coax Alice out her tears that appeared by mention of his name.
