From Defenders Of Wildlife: “Good News: this year's Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count showed an increase in western monarch populations for the second year in a row! While this is great progress, western monarch numbers are still dangerously low, and we should all continue to conserve them by planting milkweed, and other native flowers, as well as eliminating the use of pesticides. “ One thing you can do is plant and leave growing any milkweed plants. Here the most common is Horsetail Milkweed like in the photo in the upper right. WOO HOO!! THE MONARCH NURSERY IS OFFICIALLY ✺𝕆ℙ𝔼ℕ✺ IN SOUTHBURY, CT.!!! 🙌🦋🙌🦋🙌🦋🙌🦋🙌🦋🙌 I am BEYOND EXCITED!! My first eggs of the season!! I have been patiently waiting and today I feel like a little kid at Christmas!! I get immense joy from raining these little nuggets and seeing them into flutter hood , learning and caring for them! I have not been feeling well and this was the perfect addition for me while I am winding the road to recovery!! @monarch_watch finally issued the overwintering numbers from the sanctuaries in Mexico, and while this small increase is consistent with general rises and falls in a population, this increase has been a surprise to Dr. Chip Taylor, the director of @monarch_watch and others, including myself. I was expecting a population fall given the extreme weather last year (TX freeze, drought, etc.) so this was a pleasant, unexpected surprise. Though, it does seem like their population fares better during a drought than a wetter season as it provides more opportunity for breeding. I hope that while there will always be rides and falls that we see an upward trend in the coming years. We will see.
