When the waves come to a standstill – My fascination with Sassnitz, and especially the icy lighthouse, is almost omnipresent. Nevertheless, today I would like to show you a few other impressions, because they left me staring in disbelief. I stood on the high cliff path of the chalk cliffs and looked out over a sea of ice. It had simply appeared overnight. What was special was that it looked as if the waves had simply frozen from one second to the next, as if the waves had been paused.

No one else was there, but me, and no one could have heard me, but I commented on what I saw anyway: “Unbelievable! The Baltic Sea is frozen. The Baltic Sea is frozen here. What's going on here?” Yes, I had never seen anything like it before. Ice, ice everywhere. The Baltic Sea, a snow-white sea of ice. I am still thrilled that I was able to experience this. Perfect weather and almost no visitors gave me many moments of peace to enjoy it.

Now the ice is disappearing again, as can be seen on webcam images around the island. The wind has changed direction and, after several weeks of easterly winds, is gradually driving the ice back out to the open sea. The impending thaw will finally bring this special winter chapter to a close in the coming days. But the impressions will remain forever. It was beautiful. That's easy to understand, isn't it?
