I say Sashiko isn’t (Fine) Art. However, I humbly accept an admiration to our Sashiko as the Art (because I believe they mean well). I just don’t want “Art” to be an excuse to whatever, or even worse, “Not learning”. As long as one keeps learning & listening to the voice behind the word, I am happy for them to call their stitching “(Sashiko) Art”. ☆ Similarly, my mother Keiko never considered herself as an Artist. When I tell her how “creative” her works are, she laughs them off saying “I am just stitching”. Well… it is quite interesting. In Japanese culture, the title of “Art” may be something “given” rather than “insisting”. Another cultural difference and perspective to look at. Anyhow, I think Keiko makes a great Sashiko Art. The photo is Sashiko with numbers of natural dye Sashiko threads & vintage fabrics. It shines like a rainbow by her choice of thread & fabric. In 2019, I realized that I have many reasons to speak up about Sashiko in English. I appreciate your time in reading mindfully and understand how “a Japanese Sashiko individual” feels about Sashiko/Boro. ☆ You may wonder… “Oh, is there so much incorrect information in English?” No. I don’t really find “incorrect” information. There is no such a thing as “Right and Wrong” in Sashiko anyway. Then, what? I feel “strange” when I see some non-Japanese Sashiko. Not “Wrong” or “Bad”, just “Strange” and rarely “Uncomfortable”. Is it “how it looks”? Am I being too particular about what Sashiko should be....? (BTW, There isn’t such a thing as “Sashiko Should be ◯◯”). ☆ I have been wondering why to "strange". Last night, I felt something. It is probably “self‐assertive”. I cannot think of any Japanese Sashiko artisans who are “so proud” of their work. They are way too humble. None of the Sashiko artisans I know say that they do “great Sashiko”. They all would think that they are not good enough (yet). I often say, “Sashiko is a process to accept who you are”. It is a true statement. However, the message is for those who cannot have “self-affirmation”. A person with self-assertion saying “Look at my beautiful Sashiko” is a very beautiful image. There is nothing wrong with that. However, It gives me a feeling of “strange” - it makes me wonder if they care to learn what Sashiko really is. (I am not judging others. I want to share what Sashiko really is for the Japanese.) - The photo is Sashiko by Keiko with many stories of her inner self - the same photo on the post 2019.5.7 with the exact same message today. Repost. “I am the past of Sashiko, You are the future of Sashiko”. After the Sashiko Class, I encourage them with this phrase. I mean it. I am very “traditional” in Sashiko - which is in the (boring) box, stubborn and inflexible. It is good that I can be that “traditional”, and keep presenting the past. Someone should play that kind of role. At the same time, anyone who learns from me is the future of Sashiko. With collaborating the wisdom they already have & Sashiko they learn from me, they can “create” the future of Sashiko. It is not the “how it looks” that I would like to pass down - it is the spirit within the word of Sashiko. You know it by now - it is “caring” ☆ Some misunderstand my words and attack me like “Atsushi is trying to be arrogant. He excludes others who do not learn from him. I will find another Sashiko teacher”. I do not “share” my knowledge with those who do not want to learn from me. However, I am NOT saying the future of Sashiko will be made by only my students (friends). Patchworking (stitching swatches together) is not only for the “Artistic” purpose. In fact, the primary reason to patch the small swatches is to give them the second stage to be spotlighted. A small piece of (vintage) fabric can be just a waste by itself. However, by stitching together & doing Sashiko for strengthening the material, it can re-obtain the role as “cloth”. It looks beautiful - but the “artistry” is secondary. Bringing the fabric from a pile of trash to the most fashionable cloth is what we may be able to contribute to this society. It is beautiful not only because it is “artistic”, but fabric and we appreciate each other. Sashiko and Art. Especially since I think in Japanese in my brain, I am still indecisive if Sashiko is the Art. I am still learning, but there is one thing I can share. It is our hope to encourage people throughout our Sashiko.  ☆ If the definition of Art is “an expression of human creativity in visual form”, then our Sashiko can be part of the Art. However, for us, “Self‐Assertion (expressing our specific vision via creation)” is secondary. That’s another reason I do not consider myself as an activist. What we would like to do is Not to lead people. We would like to support them from behind.  ☆ By sharing out Sashiko, if we could encourage that we all have the ability to appreciate & care for others, then it is then our “mission completed”. Keiko wants “(old) fabrics” for the 2nd life. I want to protect those people like Keiko. After this crisis of pandemic is over, I would like you to come visit us and touch our stitching. I decided not to purchase any clothes in 2017 as a personal social experiment. Some of the garments are tattered. It can be “fashion” in today’s society, but my grandmother would cry how “terrible” my life became - not wealthy enough to replace the shirt with holes. ☆ I “can” get the new shirt so this is a choice. In fact, some people damage the garments for their fashion purpose. My point is that the value changes for the individual depend on where, when, how, and what choices they have or don’t have. We fantasize about “Boro”, but I believe some Japanese people disliked Boro. The value itself is not a matter of good or bad. Please choose who you are learning from. Please know what/who you are buying from. Please be aware of what you are contributing to. Over the Internet, a culture can be “washed away” quite easily. Without a (continuous) conscious awareness, the quickness, popularity and convenience will repaint what it is (was). I decided to speak up, before it gets too late (although I feel it may be too late). Your voice, consciousness, and a “choice” will either repaint or preserve the (foreign) culture (that you are not familiar with). ☆ Unfortunately, I can only speak up and share. It is not me who “chooses” what kind of Sashiko will be passed down. It is “You” who chooses the Sashiko we may see 100 years from now. So, people say Sashiko is the Art. They call us Artists. I don’t consider Sashiko as the Art (yet), therefore, we consider us more like artisans, not artists. Well, let’s say, Sashiko is the Art. Then, who defines the value of art? I assume the value of art is evaluated objectively, not subjectively. The artists themselves do not “price” the value of their pieces - the audiences(patrons) define how valuable their Art is. Then, how do I price what we make? ☆ In Japanese Folk Art, in which Sashiko is generally categorized at, anonymity of makers is one of key elements. In art, “who makes it” is more important than “what is made”. We make a lot of Sashiko items, but I literally don’t know how to price our Sashiko piece as the “Art”. Based on the hours of stitching (then it will be super expensive)? Based on the market needs? I don’t know any “Sashiko artist” who makes a decent living with only selling their end-Art (no supplies, books, and workshops). So again, let’s say, Sashiko is the Art. Then, who makes Sashiko Art?
