Hermione waited for him to open his eyes and slipped her fingertips between the buttons of his shirt again. The guarded expression reappeared on Draco's face. He searched hers, and when she smiled at the same time as she stroked over his scales, he exhaled heavily.

"I'm—"

"Half a dragon, I know." Hermione pulled his shirt out of his trousers and flicked the bottommost button open.

"—not fully human."

"I figured that out when I felt the scales." She looked down and opened the next button. His lower torso shimmered in the ambient lighting as he flexed his abdomen involuntarily. Her breath caught. "Beautiful."

He put his fingers under her chin and tipped her head up until he caught her eyes. "I'm not fully human, Hermione."

Finally, it clicked.

'No blood purity?'

'Of course,' she huffed and resolutely folded her arms under her chest. Draco raised an eyebrow. 'It's a moot concept.'

He snorted. 'Come one, Granger. Although even I have to admit that purity is not related to ability–' He clenched his jaw. 'But this is taking it one step to far.'

Hermione raised her chin. 'Well,' she sniffed, 'a couple biology lessons certainly wouldn't have done you any harm. If that were the case, the science of Mendel and other principles of genetics would have cleared up that particularly nasty bit of magical pseudo-science ages ago.'

Draco's cheeks reddened. 'What's that supposed to mean?' He glared at her.

'It means,' she said haughtily, 'that that is not how genetics work.' At his quizzical expression she added, 'The science of how physical traits, abilities, or even diseases are passed down from one generation to another.'

Draco considered her for a long moment. Finally, he seemed to have come to a conclusion, and folded his arms across his chest. 'You don't have to overcomplicate things, Granger. Blood-purity is an easy enough concept: If your father is a pure-blood and your mother is a pure-blood, you, too, are a pure.blood. If either one is a Muggle, you are a half-blood. If none has magical abilities, you are a, er, Muggle-born.'

'Right,' Hermione commented. 'So just to make it clear, if both your parents have a magical heritage, you are a pure-blood.'

Draco snorted. 'Obviously.' His previous tense posture visibly relaxed.

'Ah,' Hermione commented. 'So even if one parent was a half-blood, you would be considered a pure-blood.'

'Yes,' he said, the familiar arrogant drawl finally restored, and his eyes lingered at something behind her back, where she knew the family tapestry hung.

Hermione's looked at him, a wicked gleam to her eyes. 'Then tell me, Malfoy: Who has more magical blood: Someone who has both a pure-blooded and a muggle-born parent, or someone whose parents are both Muggle-borns? They both would be half-bloods, right?'

Again, Draco stared at her intently. 'The one with the pure-blooded parent,' he finally gritted out.

'And between magical person who has half-blood and pure-blood parentage, and a magical person whose parents are both pure-bloods, who is superior?'

Draco glared at her. After a long moment, he finally gritted out, 'None. They are equally pure-blooded.'
